We measure a quantity called the acoustic impedance spectrum, which may be considered as the response of the instrument to all frequencies.

Shakuhachi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shakuhachi are usually made from the root end of a bamboo culm and are extremely versatile instruments.
During the medieval period, shakuhachi were most notable for their role in the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhist monks, known as komuso ("priests of nothingness"), who used the shakuhachi as a spiritual tool.
When the Meiji government did permit the playing of shakuhachi again, it was only as an accompanying instrument to the koto, shamisen, etc. It was not until later that honkyoku were allowed to be played publicly again as solo pieces.

riley lee | about the shakuhachi
The history of shakuhachi in Japan dates back to the latter half of the seventh century, when the shakuhachi and other musical instruments were brought from China to become part of a court ensemble fashioned after that of the Tang dynasty.
These shakuhachi were performed for, and frequently by, the nobility of ancient Japan from the time of their introduction from China until at least the 12th century.
Whereas shakuhachi from around the 14th century until the present time have only five fingerholes, and a variable number of nodes, all of the flutes perserved in Shôsôin have six fingerholes and three nodes, not counting the uppermost node on which the blowing edge is cut.

Tom Deaver on Hochiku vs. Shakuhachi
Shakuhachi are almost always made in two pieces with the joint near the center of the length.
On some shakuhachi, and even hochiku, a thin ring of bamboo is inserted into the utaguchi end to replace part of the removed membrane and is then filed out in the area where the breath is blown over the edge, leaving a sort of crescent shaped partial ring of different color and texture.
These same notes of the shakuhachi are almost always adjusted to conform to the the musical scale currently in vogue, nowadays, the equal temperament scale with A4 somewhere between 440 and 445 hz, depending upon with whom one is talking.

Shakuhachi by Perry Yung: What is Concert Tuned?
This is a little problematic as it confuses the judgement ctriteria on what a good shakuhachi is. I've had the fortunate experience of trying many many shakuhachi, more than most shakuhachi players ever will in a life time.
There are some very very expensive shakuhachi out there ($10,000 and up) that are not only not in concert tuning but are not well tuned to themselves.
They fall in the same catagory as modern shakuhachi that are not well made, "the not so well made shakuhachi" catagory (I hate to say bad because it's very difficult making good shakuhachi and in the end, even a bad shakuhachi will serve someone well).

Shakuhachi is an aid to zen practice, to paying attention and is to be played from the truth of what the shakuhachi player is in at the present moment.
The focus is not on the player and certainly not on showing off the capabilities of the player or of the shakuhachi but on the inner discovery of the listener of the Self as the sound penetrates the skin, the mind, the heart, the inner sanctuary.

 The Shakuhachi
It was this shakuhachi, also called the gagaku shakuhachi, that was introduced to Japan from China during the latter half of the 7th century as one of the instruments used in Japanese court music.
However, for unknown reasons the gagaku shakuhachi eventually fell into disuse by this performing ensemble, and it was not until the Middle Ages that similar end-blown flutes such as the hitoyogiri and the early fuke shakuhachi were being utilized.
Today, the shakuhachi can be seen in a variety of musical contexts: e.g., jazz, pop, movie soundtracks, etc. However, the core of the shakuhachi tradition is still the classical meditation pieces known as honkyoku; the pieces originally played by the members of the Fuke sect.
