  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Shakyamuni Buddha
Although the Buddha was not represented in human form until around the 1st century CE (see Buddhist art), his physical characteristics are described in one of the central texts of the traditional Pali canon, the Digha Nikaya.
Buddha was born in B.C. 560 and died at the age of eighty in B.C. The place of his birth was a grove known as Lumbini, near the city of Kapilavastu, at the foot of Mount Palpa in the Himalayan ranges within Nepal.
Buddha realized then that he should not go to extremes in torturing the body by starvation and that he should adopt the golden mean or the happy medium or the middle path by avoiding extremes.

Shakyamuni taught the sutras to ordinary disciples, in the form of a Buddha.
Thus, the Buddha may be portrayed as a monk, like Buddha Shakyamuni, as slightly wrathful meditational deities such as Heruka, or Guhyasamaja, or as female deities such as dakinis, as wrathful male or female deities with ugly forms and animal heads, or as embracing consorts.
There are also occasions when Shakyamuni Buddha is represented as a rabbit or an elephant, recalling exemplary deeds he performed in such lives during his career as a Bodhisattva.

Imagine that rays of light stream from the crown of Buddha's head to your crown; this light purifies the negatities of your body and removes the hindrances to attaining the enlightened body of a Buddha.
Rays of light then stream from the Buddha's throat to yours, pufifying the negativities of your speech and removing hindrances to attaining the enlightened speech that communicates clearly to all sentient beings, regardless of their level or capacity.
Buddha now comes to the crown of your head, facing the same direction as you, dissolves into brilliant, white light and dissolves into your body through the crown of your head, filling your body once again with this brilliant light.

The Nature of the Buddha: the Awakened One   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The Buddha also knows that it is not possible for those who are enlightened to commit such heinous acts as killing their mother, killing their father, killing an arhat, shedding the blood of a Tathagata, or causing a schism in the Sangha; while it is possible for the unenlightened to do so.
Therefore, the Buddha knew that people should not rely on simply being good if they wish to have a pleasant rebirth, because their underlying motives might be selfish and unwholesome, and the limited good performed in one lifetime may not be enough to offset the consequences of unwholesome deeds from the past.
The Buddha saw that even more fundamental than our actions and their consequences are the views which motivate our actions and cause us to either act without regard for consequences or to act with full awareness of the chains of cause and effect.

It is often stated as fact that the Mahayana is a corruption of primitive Buddhism, a deliberate compromise to be able to compete with the faith (or bhatki) of Hinduism, which was a very popular religion in ancient India during the birthing of Buddhism.
