Shalamar - Music Downloads - Online
Bio: Shalamar was the creation of Dick Griffey, the booking agent for the television R&B program Soul Train, and British R&B producer Simon Soussan.
Shalamar's string of poppy dance-soul hits began in 1979 with "Take That to the Bank"; later that year, "The Second Time Around" hit the Top Ten.
Watley and Daniels left the group in 1982 and were replaced by Delisa Davis and Micki Free in 1984; Watley went on to stardom as a solo act.

Shalamar – The Brightest of SOLAR’s “Galaxy of Stars”
Shalamar’s second LP, Disco Gardens, found the makeshift trio members using their own voices, landing a more durable, roller-bounce hit, “Take That To the Bank.” But again, that group’s version didn’t last long either.
Shalamar didn’t really get its footing until Howard Hewitt joined, helping the group make perhaps its signature tune, “Second Time Around.” Hewitt’s flexible falsetto which could be silky smooth one minute and gritty the next was the ideal complement to Watley’s energetic alto.
Shalamar, much like the SOLAR label, faded in the early- ’90s unceremoniously, just as former members, Watley and Howard Hewitt were riding high on their respective solo careers.

Shalamar Biography and Update at SoulTracks
Shalamar began as a thrown-together producer’s group and wound up one of the most popular and exciting vocal groups of the late 70s and early 80s.
The addition of Hewett was the missing ingredient to turn Shalamar from a faceless dance act to a real Soul group and, combined with the maturing of Watley into a fine vocalist, created the most popular and interesting lineup the group would ever have.
By 1987, Shalamar had gone full circle, and was again a faceless producer’s group, by then working with young producer Babyface for their last album, Circumstantial Evidence.

Dusty Groove America - Search: Shalamar -- All Categories
The sound of Shalamar builds from a bit of bass, some snapping drums, waves of keyboards, and especially great vocals -- warm and sweet, but never too commercial -- despite the hit status of an album like this.
If anything, the group have a style that's a bit more relaxed and personal than some of their contemporaries on the Solar Records scene at the time -- one that matches the friendly title, and unassuming cover image of the set.
The album's one of the best from the point when Shalamar could still serve things up with the best -- a lean, mean, pop-focused approach to 80s groove that's produced with some razor-sharp edges by Leon Sylvers.

Shalamar was a musical group of the 1970s that was originally a disco-driven vehicle created by Soul Train booking agent Dick Griffey.
Their first hit was the 1977 Motown production "Uptown Festival", whose success inpired Griffey to replace his sessioneers with vocalists Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniels, and Howard Hewett (the latter replacing short-time member Geralt Brown) in 1978.
The most successful of the classic trio was Watley, who--with former Prince sidekick Andre Cymone--made classy solo albums and found success with her own singles, which included 1987's "Looking For A New Love", 1989's "Friends", and 1994's "When A Man Loves A Woman".
