Dance therapy officially surfaced in the wards of psychiatric hospitals during World War II, when dance instructor Marian Chace used movement to treat veterans in Washington, D.C. The practice was labeled as a distinct profession in the 1960s and was recognized by President Carter's Commission on Mental Health a decade later.
Dance therapy is currently offered in day care centers, prisons, mental health facilities, and hospitals, and is based on the belief that the body, mind, and spirit are interconnected.

Whereas "Strictly Ballroom" was an ugly-duckling fairy tale romantic comedy, "Shall We Dance?" is a narrative focusing on the liberation of the human spirit in a repressive society that dictates routine and personal associations.
Sugiyama is not the only character that finds a renewed sense of vigor through ballroom dancing-- the object of his affections, Kishikawa, learns to rekindle her love for ballroom dancing, rediscovering the joy that had been displaced by the pressures of competition.
"Shall We Dance?" is not as visually lush as "Strictly Ballroom", and in fact, the direction is relatively straightforward, without much reliance on gimmicky cinematography.

calendarlive.com: MOVIE REVIEW - 'Shall We Dance?'
"Shall We Dance?" is a sleek Hollywood crowd-pleaser, more movie than art film, but its makers have wisely stuck not only to the spirit but often even to the letter of the original.
Both films celebrate the enduring dazzle and romance of ballroom dancing, but Suo's version was also a wry comment on the way a tradition of impassive formality continues to inhibit ordinary Japanese people, where it is not unusual for men to go out for the evening alone while their wives stay at home.
If the original "Shall We Dance?" was a film ripe for a Hollywood remake, the new "Shall We Dance?" cries out to become a stage musical in its next incarnation.

One of the main reasons this movie would never work in an American telling is that the reserved, ultra socially conservative character of the public Japanese persona is at issue in this movie.
Certainly the main character awakens to a more full understanding of living a vivacious life through dance, but half of the movie's tension comes from the stereotypes and ridicule ballroom dancers face in Japan.
