	Sham 69 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Sham 69 are an English punk band from Hersham, Surrey.
		Sham 69 formed during 1976 (the NME of November 12 1976 notes that they were rehearsing at this time, although only Pursey would remain from this early lineup twelve months later).
		Sham 69 lacked the art school background of many British punk bands of the time, and brought in football chant backup vocals, and a sort of inarticulate populism in politics.

		Thanks to the likes of Sham 69 and Co not making a stand against violence and right wing involvement until it was way too late, there was a time when going to any gig could result in violence.
		Theres no denying Sham had some good solid punk songs but the flirting with all the social realism of football chants and skinhead fans reaped the inevitable reward of every gig an Altamont....There was no great come together of the working class...yawn.

		Negligibly talented like their punk brethren the Cortinas and Eater, and specializing in simplistic political vituperation, shouted vocals and roaring guitars, Sham 69 was remotely interesting in the heady days of 1976-78, only to quickly descend to joke status (in America anyway) by the turn of the decade.
		Led by vocalist and lyricist Jimmy Pursey, Sham's basic attack was "leftist" slogans chanted repeatedly over a wall of fast distorted guitars that exploded into shout-a-long choruses (all the better for their yob fans to participate).
		Exhibiting careerist proclivities and excessive crassness, the new Sham simply played like the old Sham, and Pursey fobbed the whole thing off as a retrenchment by an aging punk rocker to his "roots." Mostly it was pathetic, but based on Sham 69's history, totally unsurprising.

	Sham 69
		Sham were originally formed by vocalist Jimmy Pursey in November 1976 though initial members sush as Billy Bostick and Johnny Goodfornothing, to name but two, were soon replaced by guitarist Dave Parsons, bassist Albie Slider and drummer Mark "Dodie" Cain.
		The summer of '78 saw Sham at the No.9 spot with the "If The Kids Are United" single, a track that still to this day is regarded as one of Punk's finest recorded moments.
		It wasn't to be, for despite a Top 50 entry with "Tell The Children" the band's fourth studio LP "The Game" was unreservedly (and totally undeservedly) panned by the critics who couldn't wait to bang a nail in the band's (and Punk's) coffin.

		The band was the "voice of the people in the first wave of British punk" and introduced football chant-style lyrics into their songs.
		Columnist and critic Garry Bushell is a huge fan of the band - he coined the phrase the "Oi!" movement for the street punk sound of bands like Sham 69 in the early 80s.
		Sham 69 gigs were notorious for fights and punch-ups, with the violence eventually leading to their demise.

		On their first album, Sham 69 sounded like a gang of energetic punk-rock simpletons, well-meaning and enthusiastic if not especially gifted, but things had taken a decided turn for the worst by the time they'd cut The Adventures of the Hersham Boys in 1979.
		The Adventures of the Hersham Boys was one of Sham 69's most successful albums and launched two major chart singles, "Hersham Boys" and "Questions and Answers," proving there's a British corollary to H.L. Menken's statement that no one will ever go broke underestimating the taste of the American public.
		Oddly enough, among the seven bonus tracks added to Castle's 2000 CD reissue of the album is the single "If the Kids Are United," easily the band's best song and one of the few moments where their "come on, boys" bellowing sounded as rousing as they wanted it to be.

		The `new' Sham 69 have continued to gig and record regularly, displaying perhaps a bit more lyrical scope and suss than in earlier incarnations.
