Shamakhy, one of the most ancient cities in Azerbaijan, has been the capital of Shirvan since the 6th century.
It was first mentioned by the Greek astronomer and geographer Claudius Ptolemy in the 2 nd century A.D. Located on the Silk Road at the junction of caravan routes which linked Asia with Europe, Shemaka was an important political, trade and cultural center with bustling bazaars trading in silk, carpets, gold cloth, wool, and arms.
A few kilometres above Shamakhy there a number of picturesque "highland" villages such as Chuxuryurd with magnificent views of the Caucasus Mountains.

Shamakhi (Azerbaijani: Şamaxı) or Shamakha (Russian: Шемаха) is a rayon of Azerbaijan, and a town in the rayon.
In its history eleven major earthquakes have rocked Shamakhi, but each time it was reconstructed by its inhabitants due to role as economic and administrative capital of Shirvan Khanate and one of the key towns on the way of the Silk Road.
Shamakhi was first mentioned as Kamachia by the ancient Greco-Roman Egyptian geographer Claudius Ptolemaeus in the 1st to 2nd century.

Baku became the centre of the Baku uyezd of the Caspian region.
With the approval of the region ruled by vice-gerent in the Caucasus in 1846 a new administrative-territorial division of the area took place according to which the Baku uyezd was included in the newly established Shamakhy province.
In 1859 after a devastating earthquake in Shamakhy, the centre of the province was transferred to Baku, and the province was renamed as Baku.

 Tourism in Azerbaijan
According to written documents, Shirvanshah Gubad (1043-1049) had a fortress wall with iron doors built in Shamakhy.
Shamakhy Fortress included an inner fortress called Bala Gala or Icheri Gala and the "outside fortress" with fortress walls enclosing it from outside.
The accuracy in coating of the fortress walls shows the capital status and cultural development of Shamakhy.

Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory (ShAO) of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan SSR (now Azerbaijan Republic) was founded in 1960.
Construction of the Observatory began at the end of 1958.
At present there is whole small scientific town near Shamakhy with a dwelling settlement for its workers.

This night the employees of the Ministry of Ecology of Azerbaijan Republic have prevented the forest in the Shamakhy District from fire.
The fire first emerged on the agricultural lands of the village of Kalva (Aghsu) on August 14 which then was spread to the part of the Forest Fund of the Association of Protection and Rehabilitation of Forests of Shamakhy.
According to Khalil Ramazanov, the Deputy Chairman of the Department of Development of Forests of the Ministry of Ecology of Azerbaijan Republic, the fire has been spread 160 hectares, 10 hectares of which have fallen at the part of the Shamakhy Forest Fund.

The great poet of Azerbaijan Mirza Alakbar Sabir (1862—1911, Shamakhy) was in a close contact with the Bahá’ís of Balakhani and was often discussing the principles of the Faith with Kerbalai Ibrahim.
The other famous poet Seyid Azim Shirvani (1835—1888, Shamakhy) exposed his sympathies to the Faith in his poems.
