As stated in the Good Kalpa Sutra: "in future, a maha-bodhisattva with a ruby-red crown shall come to the suffering multitude, leading them out of their cyclic bewilderment and misery." In the Shamarpa, Sakyamuni Buddha's prediction was fulfilled.
This Buddha, the Tathagata Ko-ncho Yenlak, in the form of a bodhisattva is also known in Tibet, as the Red Crown Karmapa.

Two centuries ago, the recognition of Shamarpa Rinpoche's incarnation was blocked as a result of rivalry with the ruling Gelug school, who accused the 10th Shamarpa of having a part in the Nepalese invasion of Tibet and drove him out of the country.
In October 1986 Chobgye Tri Rinpoche, senior Sakya master and head of one of the three Sakya lineages, contacted the Shamarpa and informed him about a dream he had had and about a relative of his from Lhasa who brought a picture of a child who reportedly and repeatedly announced that he was the Karmapa.
According to the International Karma Kagyu Buddhist Association, Urgyen Trinley Dorje met with the Shamarpa in New Delhi on 9 January 2007; the meeting was arranged by Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche.

It is understood that Ogyen Thinlay was encouraged by the Tibetan government to meet with Shamarpa and negotiate the controversy to the extent that Shamarpa withdraws the charges against HH Tai Situpa, HH Gyaltsap Rinpoche, those currantly occupying Rumtek and the Joint Action Committe.
Shamarpa stood firm on his ground to have all discussions confined within the Kagyu sect; it was explicity expressed that no discussions could be advanced if it involved any entity outside of the Kagyu sect.
