But the more traditional hanukkiahs place the shamash at the center of the menorah, often elevated a bit from the other candles.
I tilted the shamash so its flame touched the wick of the first candle—and then the second—before I replaced it ever so carefully back in the center of the hannukiah.
I remember my father explaining that just as the shamash, or the servant, is used to bring light to the other candles, so Jesus came to be a servant, bringing light into the world.

In addition to the main 8 lights, each Menorah has an extra helper candle called the "Shamash." Since we are forbidden to use the Chanukah lights for any purpose other than "viewing," this way any benefit is as if coming from the Shamash.
Since the Shamash does not count as one of the regular 8 lights, your Menorah should have the Shamash set apart in some way -- either placed higher than the other candles, or significantly off to the side.
Another candle is placed for the Shamash (taller helper candle) which is used to light the others.

You know, I just was thinking about the connection of these three figures: Shamash, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Charlemagne.
Arnold, as an action hero, frequently has played roles in movies where he bears attributes of a "Sun God." Also, his last name apparently means "The Black Ploughman" in Dutch, which seems to bear a mysterious resemblance to "The Black God" which I formulated out of that Gibberish statement.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Babylonia
From their foundations he rebuilt the great Shamash temple in Sippar and the Sin temple in Harran, and in his reign the city walls of Babylon "were curiously built with burnt brick and bitumen".
He tells us that the foundation-stone of the Shamash temple laid by Naram Sin had not been seen for 3200 years, which, roughly speaking, gives us 3800 B.C., for Sargon of Akkad, Naram Sin's father; upon this date most of our early Babylonian chronology is based.
Sin, the moon, was the god of Ur; Shamash, the sun, was the god of Larsa and Sippar; when the two towns of Girsu and Uruazaga were united into the one city of Lagash, the two respective local deities, Nin-Girsu and Bau, became man and wife, to whom Gudea brought wedding presents.
