The Shamen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Shamen were an innovative, experimental electronic music band, initially formed in Aberdeen, Scotland by Colin Angus (b.
The Shamen were preceded by Alone Again Or, the Love-inspired name under which they recorded their first singles.
By September 1987, the Shamen were applying these techniques to their own music, mixing rock guitars, techno and hip-hop rhythms and sampled radio voices to create the prototype rock-dance sound which was to prove so influential to groups like Pop Will Eat Itself, Jesus Jones and EMF.

 One Little Indian • Shamen
The Shamen's second album "In Gorbachev We Trust", was an amalgam of riffing guitars, samples, funky programmed beats, and lyrics inspired by the unified vibe of the acid house scene.
The Shamen have always had the respect of the club DJ fraternity, both for the quality of their own music output, and for their uncanny ability to foresee and exploit musical trends with the selection of remixers to whom they've given over each of their singles.
The Shamen did some low-key gigs around the clubs - which harked back to the original spirit of ‘Synergy’ - this time as The Shamen Sound-system, a stripped down instrumental version of the band performing the new tracks from "Hempton Manor" in conjunction with Mr C's highly regarded club, The End.

And it follows the fairy steps of ancient shamen: tribal mystics who roamed the cutting edges of existence to talk to the spirits and discover the secrets of life.

Combining swirling psychedelic rock with hardcore hip-hop rhythms, the Shamen were one of the first alternative bands to appeal to dance clubs as much as indie rockers.
With the Sinnott family's encouragement, Angus continued the Shamen and the group did indeed begin to score hits, particularly in the U.K. where they amassed five Top 20 singles between 1991 and 1992; "Move Any Mountain (Progen 91)" managed to make it into the American Top 40 at the end of 1991, as well.
However, the Shamen fell out of favor during 1993 and their 1994 album Different Drum failed to gain much of an audience.

By the time the controversial Hempton Manor was released in 1996, the Shamen had already endured a very rocky history.
The Shamen signed to One Little Indian and released its debut album for the label, En-Tact, in 1990.
Though not a typical Shamen album and released only because of the group's deteriorating relationship with its label, Hempton Manor is a worthy addition to the band's catalog.

The Shamen: The Shamen Collection - PopMatters Music Review
Scotland's the Shamen were one of several marginal art-rock groups that gained some freak American success from their involvement with the UK's "indie dance" craze of the early '90s.
Along with Underworld, the Shamen went even farther, though, ditching their guitars and completely reinventing themselves as ravers, with much better commercial (and critical) results.
The Shamen Collection is a straight reissue of a 1998 UK release of the same name, a product of UK label One Little Indian's distribution deal with the Navarre empire.

 TrouserPress.com :: Shamen
Forerunners (and side-runners) of the acid-house movement, Aberdeen's neo-psychedelic Shamen trip back to the spacey side of 1967 British rock with scrappy production, tremolo guitars, whining mellotrons and echoed vocals, suggesting 1967 Who, 1968 Pink Floyd, the Move, Tomorrow and others without specifically quoting anyone.
Except for a few songs that lean towards less colorful folk-rock and aren't as bewitching, Drop is adventurous and entertaining stuff that easily outclasses most neo-psychedelic wannabes with abundant invention and élan.
The 10-inch Phorward (initially packaged with a bonus 7-inch) completes the Shamen's devolution: the six new songs are stark, monotonous clatters of synth drums and chanted vocals...music for leaving the room.

Whether or not the Shamen are capable of this I cannot say, but they didn't quite pull it off this time.
It seems as though this is not the fault of the lyrics themselves but their structure, which (in songs with lyrics) is arranged with the music in a way that seems just a little too direct, as if there is a heavy emphasis on the lyrics.
The Shamen need to realize that they don't have to make a statement in addition to the music - the music is the statement.
