In 1562, after the murder of Brian, Shane reached a compromise with Queen Elizabeth I in London and was acknowledged as chieftain of Tyrone.
Shane's agents murdered Matthew in 1558, but when Con died in 1559, the English recognized Matthew's eldest son, Brian, as his successor.

 Cushendun village - The Glens of Antrim
Shane O'Neill was killed in 1567 during a meeting with the MacDonnells at Crosscrene - an old church site in the townland of Ballyteerin, a kilometre or so away from Castle Carra.
His remains are said to have been hurriedly buried in a nearby graveyard and his head sent to be public ally displayed in Dublin - a cairn to Shane O'Neill was erected on the high ground overlooking Cushendun in 1908.
The road from here is known as the Torr Scenic Road and winds steeply up past the cairn and on to Tornamoney Bridge where you will find Altagore Cashel - the landscape and layout of the walls and fields in the area are intriguing and of particular archaeological interest.

Shane was the younger son of Conn ONeill, who had submitted to the English in 1541, accepting the title of Earl of Tyrone.
On Conn’s death the title, according to English law, passed to his eldest son Matthew, but this was contested by Shane who had the support of the majority of the Ulster Irish and who was then elected by them as their leader with the traditional Irish title of “The” ONeill.
Hugh ONeill, son of Matthew and Baron of Dungannon, was taken to England as a youth and brought up at the English Court where he was trained in the English fashion, both in language, politics and in the art of warfare.

With difficulty he persuaded Elizabeth to sanction vigorous measures against ONeill; and although the latter successfully avoided a decisive encounter, Sidney restored ONeills rival Calvagh ODonnell to his rights, and established an English garrison at Derry which did something to maintain order.
In the course of the lord deputys Ulster expedition in 1557 Sidney devastated the island of Rathlin; and during the absence of Sussex in England in the following year Sidney was charged with the sole responsibility for the government of Ireland, which he conducted with marked ability and success.
