The Shangaan people are part of a larger language/people group also called the Tsonga (Vatsonga) because of the fame of the Tsonga (Shangaan) people.
One distinction however, is that the Shangaan people were among the first to be used as laborers in the diamond and gold mines of South Africa.
Thousands of Shangaan people were forced to flee their traditional way of life as farmers in the countryside to cramped conditions in the towns and cities.

The Shangaan people living in the area are closely related to the Tsonga who live in Mozambique.
The name Shangaan is used of the Tsonga of the former Gazankulu because one of the kings who ruled the state (formed by Nguni-speaking exiles from the area later called Zululand) was Shoshangane.
I believe the name Shangaan (or its Portuguese equivalent) is used on either side of the border - the spelling Machangana indicates a Portuguese origin, since the combination CH in Portuguese has the same sound as SH in English.
