SHANGHAI will use subway trains that are made in China by a Chinese-owned company for the first time on Metro Line 9, which is set to open by the end of this year, subway officials announced yesterday.
According to Chen Chao, a project manager at Shanghai Metro Operation Company's department of new subway trains, the new trains will be tested for around six months before they are put into use.
Metro operators have spent US$326 million on 51 six-carriage subway trains from the Canada-based Bombardier Transport for the new line.

When new ticketing machines go into use at Metro stations around the city of Shanghai, passengers will be able to buy tickets with bankcards, not just coins, notes or a public transport card.

About 200 metro line passengers in Shanghai face the possibility of criminal charges after they refused to get off a train that broke down during rush hour Tuesday morning.
According to the metro line operator, local police still haven't decided whether or not to punish the passengers, but according to Chinese law they could be fined or taken into custody for up to 15 days for intentionally delaying service along the line.
By pressing the emergency buttons, which prevent the train from moving, the passengers delayed traffic on the metro line for about 12 minutes as the train's conductor had to go to each car and reset the buttons.
