Allegory and ambiguity in Zhang Yimou's Shanghai Triad
Mob-ruled Shanghai in the 1930's is the setting for the first half of Shanghai Triad [Yao ya yao, yao dao waipo qiao].
Shanghai Triad can also be seen as another showpiece for Gong Li: crafted this time to display her in a sophisticated, international setting.

His 1994 film "Shanghai Triad" is no different in that aspect and once again Yimou Zhang uses a very interesting point of view to tell this story about two opposing Chinese mob families during the roaring 30s.
Opium smuggle is the main source of income for these triads, and as in all territorial undertakings, the competition between the families involved is fierce.
"Shanghai Triad" is presented in its original 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio on this DVD in a transfer that is enhanced for 16x9 televisions sets.

Shanghai Triad concerns young Shuishung Tang, who has come to Shanghai on the order of his Uncle.
The film, "Shanghai Triad" from Chinese director, Yimou Zhang, is a week in the life of 14 year-old Shuisheng Tang--a country boy who is sent from the provinces to live in decadent Shanghai in the 30s as a servant to a glamourous nightclub singer named Bijou (Li Gong).
However, of them all, "Shanghai Triad" has a special appeal for me. It is the character of Bijou and the relationship she has with Shuisheng that makes "Shanghai Triad" my favourite Yimou Zhang film.

"Shanghai Triad" returns to familiar themes sounded by Zhang's earlier works, such as the loss of innocence, and entrapment in a system from which there is no escape.
The triad's most compelling characteristic isn't evil, or its lawlessness, but rather its function as a System with a rigid code of behavior and a million pairs of prying eyes and ears to enforce it.
Because this strict code of behavior and of ethical obligation so pervades the triad, the worst imaginable behavior is to breach that trust: to steal your compatriot's woman, to conspire with someone outside the fraternity, to attempt to leave the gang.

Although his new film, "Shanghai Triad," is narrowed by the same atmosphere of political repression that keeps Zhang away Friday evening, it still speaks the stirring universal language of his bolder work.
"Shanghai Triad" must be seen in its proper context, as a film that was shut down during production because of Zhang's political problems over "To Live," which addressed itself to recent Chinese history with an openly critical tone.
Hence his choice of "Shanghai Triad," which may be as close as this great director can come to making a conventional film.

Shanghai Triad may be his most accomplished effort to date; it's certainly the finest film of the year.
Set in 1930 Shanghai, this is a tale of mobsters and molls, greed and corruption, ambitious youth and devouring age that's evocative of classics from Public Enemy to GoodFellas.
Told strictly from his point of view, Shanghai Triad is a lesson on how to watch and listen, on how to discern the innocence in an opulent production number performed for degenerates, and the corruption suggested in a folk tune sung by a pretty peasant girl.

Fear and Loathing in Shanghai / `Triad' is a story of gangland vice
In ``Shanghai Triad,'' a stylized tale of gangland vice, which opens today at Bay Area theaters, Gong plays Xiao Jingbao, an entertainer and prostitute who luxuri ates in her rank as mistress to Shanghai's most powerful drug lord (Li Baotian).
Set in 1930s Shanghai, the most Westernized of Chinese cities and, from the looks of this film, the most corrupt, ``Shanghai Triad'' is told from the point of the view of Shuisheng, a country bumpkin whose uncle is part of the powerful Tang dynasty that runs Shanghai.
``Shanghai Triad'' is gorgeous and engaging, but a tad slight when held up to Zhang's greatest films, including ``Red Sorghum'' and ``Ju Dou.'' For Zhang, perhaps, the challenge of telling a story of corruption and betrayal and re- creating the wicked, glamorous Shanghai of the '30s was sufficient reason to mount this film.

With atmosphere to spare, "Shanghai Triad" takes us from the city's backstreet warehouses to its glittering nightclubs, and eventually to a remote island where the final reels reveal the characters' true colors with a few unexpected twists.
Gorgeously photographed, with lavish period details and flamboyant nightclub sequences, "Shanghai Triad" is a terrific example of an artistic director turning a genre piece into something much more.
"Shanghai Triad" is rated R, but it's primarily for a scene that has Bijou cussing as she tears up her room in a rage; the violence and sex are quite discreet, especially by modern American standards.

In Shanghai Triad, Shuisheng has been sent to the city because of his relationship to the deceivingly fatherly-looking boss of Shanghai's ruling mob family.
Shuisheng's job is to be slave/servant to the boss' mistress, the nightclub singer Little Princess Gold (Gong Li), whose name is far more precious than she is. In reality, Little Princess is a petty tyrant over all her servants, perhaps as revenge for having to nuzzle up to the old boss.
Like the Godfather films, Shanghai Triad has a air of Machiavellian conspiracy, a benevolent patina concealing very real evil in its portrayal of a sense of family.

Shanghai Triad is a film of contrasting halves.
The film successfully conveys lurid images of what it must have been like to be in illicit Shanghai in the 1930's, not too different from a prohibition America of the same time period.
Embracing this metaphor, one cannot see "Shanghai Triad's" parting shot without comparing it to Chiapau's accusatory stare at the conclusion to Mira Nair's "Salaam Bombay".

But Shanghai Triad concentrates on the relationships between the characters, especially the characters without power--namely, the women and children.
Children and peasants are often shown below the horizon, submerged in the land, in an unforced metaphor for their harmony with nature and simple desires, as opposed to the greed of the gangsters.
In this portrayal of peasants and children, Shanghai Triad shows the influence of Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray; in fact, some of the scenes of children walking through fields of tall, feather-tipped grass are strikingly reminiscent of Ray's sublime Pather Panchali.

Zhang Yimou's new film, Shanghai Triad, is a tale of gangster life in which the violence is mostly emotional, and the ultimate triumph of evil is so complete and unmitigated that it's positively bracing.
Shanghai Triad is set in China in the 1930s.
If my enthusiasm for Shanghai Triad is a little reserved, it's just because of the old-fashionedness, a certain lack of tension in the rural scenes that compounds the romanticizing of country life.
