Shangri La Dee Da was written and recorded in the same Malibu villa where Scott showered (mmm...early '90s fantasies are suddenly flooding back) and Eric made toast.
Shangri La Dee Da is a complex and genre-bending joyride.

Shangri-La Dee Da stands with the band's best work -- a furious tug of war between strychnine-laced grunge and acid-stoked psychedelic pop.
Shangri La displays an earnestness and a level of comfort not heard on previous albums.
The span of moods and melodies on Shangri-La Dee Da is nearly as sprawling, but this time the lyrics take on a deeper tinge, and they give the album a weight and coherence lacking on previous STP releases.

Well, after several pitfalls and even a stint in prison, Weiland apparently has kicked that pesky heroin addiction but, with the release of their fifth album, STP triumphantly shows the music has survived the bumpy ride.
It truly is remarkable that, after all these years and all the turmoil, the Stone Temple Pilots have managed to pull through intact while, even more incredibly, still generating some of the best rock music you'll hear today.
Shangri-La Dee Da is filled with the inspiration of a man who somehow managed to pull himself out of his own personal hell, and the sound of a band that successfully endured the storm.

STP was never content to rest on their laurels in the past, but Shangri-La Dee Da does just that.

What's become clear after five albums - including their latest, Shangri-La Dee Da - is that this Southern California quartet isn't slavishly devoted to anyone's scene, let alone any one sound.
An apt subtitle might have been "Detox Postmortem," the story of a battle-scarred survivor facing up to his responsibilities as a recovering addict (hung over and hung out to dry in "Dumb Love") and family man (the love-struck dad in "A Song for Sleeping").
Shangri-La Dee Da may be the most soul-searching album STP have ever done, but it still roars like a jukebox on a Saturday night.

Shangri La Dee Da is a very good album that shows the band surviving their weakest moment thus far, 4.
The album pretty much stalled at retail (it did go gold, on the basis of band name alone), as the first single, the pop rock Days of the Week, met an unfair fate at MTV and radio, pushed aside by the same nu metal and pop acts of 1999.
But Shangri La Dee Da is a solid record that deserved a better fate.

 Stone Temple Pilots Album Reviews
Shangri-La Dee Da (Atlantic ’01) Rating: B+ Alas, the good vibes were short lived, as the band's next album, the again abominably titled Shangri-La Dee Da, received mixed reviews and didn't make much of a commercial splash.
I'm not sure why "Days Of The Week" wasn't a major hit single (and let's face it, without a hit single most albums are DOA these days), as it's a supremely catchy mid-tempo pop rocker, and the gorgeously heartfelt ballad "Wonderful" likewise would've sounded great on the radio.
In most cases the song selections are the obvious yet correct choices, and though perhaps a few more well-known songs ("Dead And Bloated," "Pretty Penny," "Unglued") could've made the cut as well, by and large this album does a very good job of presenting STP as the stellar singles band that they were.

Shangri-La Dee Da - The Daily Californian
What a long, strange trip it's been for the Stone Temple Pilots: derision as a wannabe grunge act, drugs, rehab, a disappointing third album, more drugs, more rehab, near-breakups, disappointing side projects, a disappointing fourth album, and still more drugs and rehab.
So it's perhaps a bit of an understatement to say that there was an awful lot of outside pressure working against Shangri-La Dee Da, the fifth work by the San Diego foursome.
Somewhat miraculously, however, Scott Weiland and crew pull it together pretty well this time around, and the result is an album that not only manages to be tough without needing to be either rap or metal but also, dare I say it, even sweet in places without resorting to cheap sentiment.

After my first listen I wasn't exactly impressed by Shangri-La Dee Da, but soon the newly sober Scott Weiland's beautiful voice grew on me just like it had in previous STP releases.
As it stands right now, Shangri-La Dee Da is a solid addition to STP's discography, but as far as I'm concerned, it just doesn't compare to thier past efforts.
Not bad, but not ground-breaking in any sense, a solid effort from a group that I am glad to see has made it through tough times and is back to doing what they do best, making music that appeals to the masses, as well as rock fans of all types.

FoundryMusic BANDS Review: STP - SHANGRI-LA DEE DA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The first single off Shangri-La Dee Da, entitled "Days of the Week" is a very poppy, catchy rocker, which shows a somewhat softer side of the new clean and sober husband and father, Scott Weiland.
Produced by longtime compatriot Brendan O'Brien, Shangri-La Dee Da is ripe with STP-friendly crunch rock, like you'll hear in"Wonderful", "Coma", and "Hollywood Bitch"...and just when you thought you knew these guys, you run into a track like "A Song for Sleeping", which is a lullaby from Weiland to his son.
It's comforting that at a time when all of the career bands seem to be going the way of the dodo and one-hit-wonders are everywhere, Stone Temple Pilots are showing us all that you can still make a life out of Rock and Roll.

One of the joys of listening to STP is how this band had a particular way of showing-off their influences but never sounded like copycats, more like artists filtering what they like through their own sound and style.
Some have actually bashed the band for sounding "too much" like their heroes, I suppose these critics prefer the same, monotonous music currently on the radio like Staind, Godsmack and Nickelback, if STP sound like Led Zeppelin theres nothing wrong with that, because it means they actually sound good.
STP have always been able to be both menacing and tender, take for example how the hard rocker "Hollywood Bitch" with its burning guitar chords and up-front vocals changes into the next track, "Wonderful," a beautiful, spacey ballad with gorgeous slide guitar.
