With the debut of the first Dire Straits album, Knopfler re-defined the rock guitar hero with a signature sound and style that is instantly recognizable.

 Knopfler seeks knirvana with Shangri-La
But his latest solo album, Shangri La, is devoid of the kind of circularity and staleness that you'd expect from a guy who has been in the limelight of the popular music scene for a good two and a half decades.
The album opens with "5:15 a.m.," a touching ballad about a dead gangster, shot full of lead, lying in his Jaguar on an early winter morning—a fitting introduction to work that's all about mitigated happiness and the dark side of ambition.
Knopfler makes sure there is a surprise or two on the album.

 Knopfler Scores Solo 'Shangri-La'
By Barry A. Jeckell, N.Y. Mark Knopfler's fourth solo album will be released Sept. 28 via Warner Bros. Dubbed "Shangri-La," the set is the former Dire Straits leader's follow-up to 2002's acclaimed "The Ragpicker's Dream."
In other news, one of Knopfler's guitars was among those auctioned earlier this summer to benefit the Eric Clapton-founded addiction treatment facility Crossroads Centre in Antigua.
"People like Bob Dylan, Neil Young and the Band used to hang out there," Knopfler says.

 sandiego.com: Music Scene
Mark Knopfler has a new album out titled "Shangri-La".
The song on the Knopfler album is "BOOM, Like That." It's a deceptive little ditty that lulls you to sleep with its bouncy rhythm, signature Knopfler guitar flourishes, and Mark's hypnotic deep voice.
In Malibu where he recorded the album, Mark was hot and heavy in the middle of the publicity ramp-up that now accompanies the release of every major album.

Shangri La - find and buy in the Simplest shop
I 'm guessing it is because Knopfler starts with the essential ingredient in any great album - great songwriting, and keeps the instrumentation to a minimum so the beauty and sophistication of songs can still be appreciated.
Knopfler's voice and guitar work sounds so lifelike, like he's playing in the room with you.
Nevertheless, it all just comes together in an album that is worth owning if you like ANY of his prior work including that of the Dire Straits.

 Shangri-La by Mark Knopfler CD
A soulful combination of classic guitar and the voice of good ol' Mark Knopfler, I think this is a perfect album for those who wish to slow down the pace a bit, chill out and relax to some semi blues-rock.
Knopfler keeps things low-key throughout most of SHANGRI-LA, with quietly intoned, often drolly sardonic lyrics, supple finger-picked guitar lines, and songs full of subtly crafted surprises.
Mark Knopfler's first excursions outside of Dire Straits were film soundtracks, where his guitar mastery served him well.

January 2005 Features: Postcards from Shangri-La - Mark Knopfler Expands His Timbral Palette
This singing, cello-like color wends its way through Knopfler’s newest album, Shangri-La [Warner Bros.], adding a sense of brooding mystery to his poetic lyrics and laid-back melodies.
We asked Knopfler to take us back to a vintage studio in Malibu, California, where he and his bandmates of nearly a decade recorded Shangri-La ’s 14 evocative songs.
But not Mark Knopfler, who traded his signature phasoidal Strat tone—a clucky bridge-and-middle-pickup timbre that propelled “Sultans of Swing” to the top of the charts in 1978—for a throaty Les Paul lead sound.

Mark Knopfler - Shangri-La - Warner Brothers Records - CD
Knopfler does some sweet chicken-pickin' on the shit-kickin' Lonnie Donegan tribute "Donegan's Gone", and "Don't Crash the Ambulance" closes out the disc with what could be a stolen serenade from a spaghetti western, with great wry, cryptic lyrics.
In 1996, Knopfler's first proper solo album was released to mixed reviews.
Knopfler began his solo work in earnest, while still with the band, doing the soundtrack to the great little movie 'Local Hero', in 1983.

The South End Newspaper - MUSIC REVIEWS - Mark Knopfler’s ‘Shangri-la’ disappoints
It is hard to talk harshly about Knopfler’s “Shangri-la” because of what he has brought to the world of rock ‘n’ roll over the last quarter century, but his effort on this album is questionable.
Mark Knopfler’s new albumShangri-la” is none of those things.
Shangri-la might be paradise, but the albumShangri-la” is exactly the opposite.

Reviews: Music: Shangri-La by Mark Knopfler
I understand that some are still searching for Mark Knopfler's Dire Straits guitar solos and may not be interested in a laid-back effort as Shangri-La. The man has grown older and his music has flourished and matured by age.
If you dig the focused, guitar oriented sound of the early Dire Straits albums, you'll like the sound of Shangri-la. The title track features Mark's best vocals on the album and some gorgeous guitar.
"Shangri La" is a disc that I reccomend, but don't plan to be blown away by it.

 Untitled Document
Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on the 12th of August 1949.
The Knopfler brothers would often sit up late into the night playing songs and, without knowing it, to some extent laying the foundations of what was to become, in time, Dire Straits.
Autumn 2002 saw the release of his third solo album, The Ragpicker's Dream, but, just as rehersals were about to begin, the planned 2003 tour had to be cancelled due to a serious motorcycle accident.

 RollingStone.com: Shangri-La : Mark Knopfler : Review
Knopfler has crafted a short-story collection of tales about crime ("Postcards From Paraguay") and punishment ("Everybody Pays"), American icons ("Song for Sonny Liston" and "Back to Tupelo," a non-salute to Col. Tom Parker) and even franchise capitalism ("Boom, Like That" -- the tastiest tune ever inspired by late McDonald's chief Ray Kroc).
Mark Knopfler has grown into one of rock's more mature and sharp-eyed writers; in an Ashlee Simpson world, he takes pages from Philip Roth and Joan Didion -- and still plays the guitar far better than any of the above.
Shangri-La -- recorded in the famed Malibu studio of the same name that was once home to Bob Dylan and the Band, and featuring the same musicians who shined on 2000's Sailing to Philadelphia and 2002's,I>The Ragpicker's Dream -- mixes sunniness and darkness in artful ways.

The Music Box: Mark Knopfler - Shangri-La (Album Review)
It’s been quite awhile since Mark Knopfler has sounded as relaxed as he does on his fourth proper studio effort Shangri-La, but his arrangements are so unassuming that, at first glance, all but his most avid fans are likely to become disengaged long before the set has drawn to its conclusion.
The problem, then, is that over the course of the album’s 66 minutes, Knopfler’s many muted statements begin to blur together, and one becomes lost within his deep baritone as well as his sparse, ethereal accompaniments.
Indeed, this is an effort that might have been better suited for the LP age when four album sides offered a more digestible format for works as laborious as this initially appears.

Reviews: Music: Shangri-La by Mark Knopfler
shangri la is a wonderfully mellow and fleetingly sublime album that capture the essence of a good melody while driving emotions right through the heart.
Knopfler, occassionally guilty of almost intentionally denying his gift for melody, seems to have finally matched his superb guitar playing with inspired and soaring melodies.
I'm not sure this is by design -- Knopfler seemed to make much of the fact that he recorded the CD at a studio on the California coastline -- or happenstance.

Un album solista di Knopfler focalizzato sulla sua voce, come Sailing To Philadelphia (Warner Bros, 2000), e` una contraddizione in termini.
Shangri-la (Warner, 2004) is possibly the least inspired album of his career.

 Mark Knopfler - Shangri-La - 93.9 The River, The Valley's Progressive Radio
Shangri-La, Mark Knopfler's fourth solo release and his first since breaking his collarbone, shoulder, and seven ribs in a motorcycle crash in March 2003, finds the eternally laid-back Dire Straits frontman in familiar territory.
Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1949.
In addition, Knopfler is a first rate producer working with everyone from Bob Dylan to Tina Turner, for whom he wrote the song Private Dancer.

 Blogcritics.org: Mark Knopfler - Shangri-La
Cultural Identity : In Sailing To Philadelphia, Mark Knopfler drew on many American-specific idioms to paint a canvas that was redolent of Anytown, USA.
Dire Straits went on to true rock superstardom before Knopfler went out on his own to record some pretty cool solo albums and soundtracks.
With his attackless delivery (no picks involved), Knopfler (and his Dire Straits cohorts) created their own scene with the release of "Sultans Of Swing".

Bruce Springsteen: Devils & Dust. Buy music online
This album is a tribute to these guys....
Comment 1.- Please don't listen to the one star idiots who seem more interested in bashing The Boss for his politics than the music, Devils and Dust is a great album by the boss, nearly as good as The Rising.
Comment 2.- Having been a musician for many years I have had to endure guys who know 2 or 3 chords getting up on the stage and boring me to death with their fake country accents and their lousy voices and their inabilty to get the words out so anybody can understand them.

 Shangri-La (2004) - Mark Knopfler (2004)
Recorded in California (at Shangri-La studios no less)during his convalescence following a serious bike accident, Shangri-La is the product of an artist who continues to soak-up the rich musical heritage of both sides of the Atlantic and crafted it into something contemporary and special.
Blues remains Knopfler's key influence with tracks such as Boom, Like That and the Hammond-drenched title track confirming the great man's distinctive guitar work and husky vocal style are both still present.
A handful of A-list guest performances bring a sense of occasion to the proceedings with pedal steel performances from Paul Franklin and long time cohort Richard Bennett particularly on the toasty warm All That Matters.

 Mark Knopfler: Shangri-la (2004): Reviews
Like [J.J.] Cale, Knopfler prefers murmuring to emoting while threading fancy little guitar figures through songs that can't decide whether to shuffle into the haze or nod off.
This album though not guitar heavy is an excellent piece of work.
One of the nicest albums I've purchased since MK started his solo carreer...
