	S B Chavan: The tough taskmaster
		Shankarrao Bhaurao Chavan was one of the last Gandhi family loyalists, who had the opportunity to closely watch all three prime ministers from the Nehru-Gandhi clan.
		Chavan, who enjoyed the rare distinction of assuming the mantle of chief ministership of Maharashtra twice, will be remembered for his role as Union home minister in the Narasimha Rao government when the Babri Masjid was demolished on December 6, 1992.
		Chavan, who served as chief minister from 1975 to 1977 and then again from 1986 to 1988, was responsible for renaming the state secretariat as Mantralaya.

		Chavan is reported to have told Rubaru, an interview-based show to be telecast on Sunday on the El TV network, that he could not save the Babri Masjid in December 1992 because Rao would not allow him to dismiss the Kalyan Singh government in Uttar Pradesh four days before the demolition.
		Chavan also claimed that important and sensitive documents related to the Rajiv Gandhi assassination were not shown to him by the director of the Intelligence Bureau.
		Chavan said the documents include a sensitive message in Tamil which was intercepted 15 days before the assassination.

		The Bombay high court on Wednesday censured the Maharashtra government for granting a prime plot of land to the Shankarrao Chavan charitable trust at Backbay Reclamation in Nariman Point for next to nothing.
