 History Of The Shankill Road
The Shankhill Road itself was an ancient track, the main link from County Down to Antrim, known then as the Antrim Road, it was not until 1831 that the Shankhill Road was officially named.
The Shankhill Parish extended from Greencastle in the North to Malone in the South.
In the ensuing years, the Shankhill population dropped from 76,000 to 26,000.Over a thirty-year period the Greater Shankhill and its residents were subjected to numerous bomb explosions and shootings, the most horrific being what is now known as the Shankhill Bomb.

It is a great pity that the people of the Shankhill Road have not been made aware of the simple fact that she never compared Protestants to Nazis in any shape or form.
We have benefited from the unique way in which President McAleese has made use of her office to bring people together, and it is sad that her efforts have been sabotaged for narrow political gain.

Anyone who has taken the mural tour will not be surprised to learn that no-one else was to be found snapping photographs of their friends posing before the wall paintings.
Where as a mural of a smiling Bobby Sands looks down on those who drive the Falls Road, a mural of an anonymous ski-masked man, with an automatic assault rife, seems to warn all those with opposing views to stay off Shankhill Road.
The streets of Shankhill were thankfully empty so we were able to move about unmolested and to take pictures of the more intimidating murals.

One of the first things that you notice about the Shankhill Road, is its size.
The Belfast City Council building near the start of the road is not one of the most beautiful buildings you have ever seen and it certainly won't be featuring on Lesser Spotted Ulster.
The orange and fl tiles are probably the strangest that you have ever seen and the pattern belongs somewhere in the depths of the 60s or 70s.

We marched along to the Shankhill Orange Halls and then had a couple of minutes break waiting for the rest of the district.
The crowds were amazing, in the ten mile route there were very few gaps on the pavement, and when walking through the town centre they were at least 12 deep with people standing on walls and on the top of bus stops.
When the parade halted at the park, LOL 739 took us for a buffet and refreshments, then back to the park to do the reverse routes back through the town, which was busier than in the morning.
