The stations on this line (from North to South) were Ryde St Johns Road, Brading, Sandown, Shanklin, Wroxall and Ventnor (East).
It ran from the station of Merstone and headed south to Godshill, Whitwell and St Lawrence, and was opened in July, 1897, and expanded to Ventnor West station in June, 1900.
This ran from Ryde St Johns Road to Shanklin on its opening on 23 August, 1864, and was expanded to Ventnor in 1866.

Quainton Road Station, six miles North of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, was bought by the Quainton Railway Society, and in Easter 1970 hosted a three day steam loco rally.
Suffering the same cutbacks until little of the originally extensive Island railway remained, the steam engines were finally ousted and replaced on the last stretch of line from Ryde Pier to Shanklin by a fleet of antique London Transport electric tube trains.
One of two saddle tank locomotives (shown right) retired from the Blue Circle cement works at Swanscombe, Kent, also went to Quainton Railway Society at about this time; the other going on for a new lease of life at the Middleton Railway Trust in Leeds.

 The Isle of Wight Central Railway - Maycock, R.J. and Silsbury, R.
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway has since re-opened the section of railway between Smallbrook Junction (where there is a station on the Ryde to Shanklin line) to Havenstreet and Wootton.  The book is casebound with a gold-blocked spine, it is to A5 format, and is printed on art paper throughout.
The new company combined the Cowes & Newport Railway opened in 1862, the Isle of Wight (Newport Junction) Railway opened in 1875 and the Ryde & Newport Railway opened from Ryde to a joint station with the Cowes & Newport Railway at Newport in 1875.
A later addition to the Isle of Wight Central Empire was the Newport Godshill and St Lawrence Railway, opened to St Lawrence in 1897 and to Ventnor Town in 1900.

Two years later the Isle of Wight Railway opened a line between Ryde and Shanklin but it was a further 11 years before the two lines were linked by the Ryde and Newport Railway which diverged from the Isle of Wight Railway at Smallbrook Junction, running into a joint station with the CNR at Newport.
The Isle of Wight (Newport Junction) Railway also opened in 1875 from the IWR at Sandown through Merstone to a terminus at Newport Pan Lane; the line was extended into the joint station at Newport in 1879 and Pan Lane was closed.
Initial restoration took place at Newport Station but in 1970 the local council acquired the station for a new bypass for the town and the Society were required to remove their rolling stock at short notice.

There are fascinating 'behind the scenes' pictures of the daily life of the Island railways showing exterior station views, life on the platform (even after the train has departed) and superb action shots.
It commemorates the 40th anniversary of the final year of railway operation of the Ryde-Newport-Cowes and Ryde-Brading-Sandown-Shanklin-Wroxall-Ventnor lines.
When he died in 2002 his collection of films was passed to the Bluebell Railway by his sister, and now resides with the South East Video Archive in Brighton.

The ferry leaves Portsmouth from the Portsmouth Harbour railway station, and arrives at the 'wet end' of Ryde Pier, where the Island Line train is waiting.
Train services also run to the ferry terminal on the mile-long Ryde Pier from Shanklin, Sandown, Lake, Brading, Smallbrook Junction, Ryde St Johns, and Ryde Esplanade at the base of the pier, where you'll find the Southern Vectis bus station and the Hovercraft terminal.
Ryde is the largest town on the island, and is on the north-eastern shore, with roads to Cowes, Newport and Sandown.

St John's first vicar in 1907 was the Rev R J Roberts who had already served as curate-in-charge for some years.
The original church of St John's was a small cruciform edifice of stone, built in the early English style to a design by T R Saunders of Ventnor.
St John's did not have a churchyard and, for several years, burials continued to be made at Newchurch, Godshill, Shanklin or Ventnor.

Wroxall station, opened when the Isle of Wight Railway extended from Shanklin to Ventnor in 1866, had two platforms, a passing loop and a 280 ft siding.

The remaining line between Cowes and Smallbrook Junction survived the initial wave of closures but with the end of steam on the horizon the reprieve was short lived with the line closing to passengers under the Beeching cuts in February 1966.
On 21.7.1991 the line was reopened westwards to Ashey and on to a new terminus at Smallbrook Junction where new interchange facilities are now available with the electrified Island Island Line.

Sandown railway station is still on the one remaining operational railway on the Island, which now goes from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin.
Its success, along with that of other neighbouring Isle of Wight resorts led to the building of a railway connecting Sandown with Ventnor at the south and Ryde on the north coast of the Island.
Sandown Bay is the name of the bay off the English Channel which both towns share, and it is notable for its long stretch of easily accessible golden sandy beach.
