 Claude Elwood Shannon Summary
Shannon's work on information systems not only had important implications in the whole theory of communications but was of considerable value in the development of computers.
Shannon and his famous electromechanical mouse Theseus, named after the Greek mythology hero of Minotaur and Labyrinth fame, and which he tried to teach to come out of the maze in one of the first experiments in artificial intelligence.
Yet Shannon, whose genius many scientists consider at par with Einstein's, was oblivious to the marvels of the digital revolution because his mind was ravaged by Alzheimer's disease, his wife mentioned in the same Star-Ledger article.

Shannon attended Fuller's memorable lectures while a student at the Art Institute of Chicago (where the artist received an MFA in 1971).
Later, designing a similar object to represent the distance between the earth and the moon (Moons, 1987), Shannon found that the gap is equal to 109 moon diameters, a remarkable correspondence that led him to focus on similar factors of 109 in the mass and distance ratios of several other planetary bodies.

The primary rain forest not only has a greater number of species present, but the individuals in the community are distributed more equitably among these species.
Because diversity indices provide more information than simply the number of species present (i.e., they account for some species being rare and others being common), they serve as valuable tools that enable biologists to quantify diversity in a community and describe its numerical structure.
