Also at this time batteries were built along the Shannon estuary, on the north shore in Co. Clare from the West, at Kilcredaun, Doonaha and Kilkerin, on the South shore on Carrig Island and Tarbert Island, and in the centre of the estuary on Scattery Island.
The principle fortifications in Shannonbridge are on the West bank of the river Shannon, a large barracks and two earthwork batteries were on the East bank south of the bridge, while to the north of the bridge on the island was a further earthwork battery or gun emplacement for several cannon.
Shannonbridge is one of the three fortified passes still maintained upon the Shannon, the other two being Banagher and Athlone.’

Shannonbridge's Junior Footballers championship aspirations came to an end in Ferbane on Saturday evening last, when a draw was not enough to keep the Shannonsiders in contention for honors this season.
Shannonbridge started the game well and Shane Kelly bagged a goal midway through the first half to give the Bridge a lead of 1-2 to 0-4 at the interval.
Shannonbridge had some good performances on the day with Alan Gunning shinning in the back line while up front Mike Devine was effective at full forward and contributed a good point.

Rachra is generally considered the old name for Shannonbridge, but 'Shannonbridge' was adopted after the building of the bridge in 1757.
It is said that the military initially constructed a village, the 'first Shannonbridge', in the vicinity of Temple Duff graveyard just south of the power station (it can be seen in the 25 inch map).
In the 1950's in Shannonbridge a ridge of grass ran along the centre of the street.

ESB today (Monday, 18 June, 2001) welcomed the news that it has received notification of decisions to grant planning permission from Offaly Co Council and Longford Co Council for the proposed state of the art peat fired power stations at Shannonbridge and Lanesboro.
The new fluidised-bed peat plants will be commissioned in the next three years and will involve an investment of over £200 million (EUR 254m) in Co Offaly and Co Longford.
The new stations at Shannonbridge and Lanesboro are scheduled for completion by 2004.
