The northern China province of Shanxi borders on Shaanxi Province on the west, Nei Monggol Autonomous Region (Inner Mongolia) on the north, Hebei Province on the east, and Henan Province on the south.
Shanxi was inhabited by farmers as early as 5000 BCE, and during the Western Zhou dynasty (1045–771 BCE), the state of Jin was established in the area.
Shanxi merchants ranged far and wide from Central Asia to the coast of eastern China; by the Qing Dynasty they were conducting trade across the two sides of the Great Wall.

Shanxi University (SXU) was founded on May 8,1902 (28th year of Guangxu Emperor, Qing Dynasty) by the name of Shanxi Grand School, then as one of the only three state-sponsored universities in China.
In 2002 Shanxi University observed its grand centennial anniversary celebration and was designated as one of the five universities in the middle part of China entitled to special support from the Ministry of Education.
Shanxi University has 1,105 faculty members including 197 professors and 307 associate professors; 73 are eligible of advising doctoral students 306 eligible of advising Master’s students.

Shanxi University, long known as a supreme institution of higher learning in the province, is among the earliest of its kind in China, and a key one under the Provincial Education Commission.
Founded in 1902, Shanxi University, first named Shanxi Daxuetang (Shanxi School of Higher Learning), divided into two sections: Chinese and Western and from 1912 to 1949, changed its name in Chinese several times to suit the need of the time, meaning respectively University of Shanxi, Provincial Shanxi University and National University of Shanxi.
After a nation-wide college and department readjustment in the period 1952-53, the colleges of medicine and technology became independent, those of liberal arts and science are combined into Shanxi Teacher's College, and that of law, renamed College of Finance and Economics, were made part of Chinese People's University in Beijing.
