"Shaolin Cowboy" definitely has the look and style of a European album and retains the hyperdetail and violence of "Hard Boiled." For a first issue of an American-style comic book, however, there is not much else to judge here.
The lead character is a quiet Chinese cowboy who rides a talking horse and is an expert in combat.
It's true, Shaolin's entire first-issue plot can be summed up in one sentence (Cowboy gets jumped, then kicks all their a**es), but it is this simplicity that makes the issue such a great read.

Shaolin Cowbody is the most enjoyably strange book I've picked up in a while, and I'm including Cromartie High School #1 in that characterization.
In Issues #1 and #2, the Shaolin Cowboy single-handedly defeated King Crab (actually a crab), Crab's Shaolin fist, and his group of Revengers, using the might of Hsing-I kung-fu (strangely appropriate, if you know kung-fu at all).
Since the Shaolin Cowboy is an inscrutable Oriental, his ass does most of the talking.

Comixfan Forums - SHAOLIN COWBOY #2 REVIEW
The second issue of Burlyman Entertainment's Shaolin Cowboy is a pulpy comic book delight; characterised by graphic scenes of violence, shocking amounts of blood and gore, sensational subject matter, and a script where twisted humour is very much to the forefront.
Shaolin Cowboy #2 is a beautifully crafted comic book with a cool and unique concept which just manages to avert the reader’s attention away from the loosely defined central character and the nondescript world he lives in.
Both Burlys, Shaolin Cowboy and Doc Frankenstein seem to be suffering from the same problem at the moment, that the art is top-notch high-class arguably best out there stuff, whereas the plots are somewhat...lacking.

"The Last Sane Cowboy" is set in Goodbrey's Unfolded Earth, the surreal land of stretched, folded, and unfurled reality and of pure, unadulterated imagination, it's a place of fever dream high strangeness of the likes you have never seen before and it is a place that once you visit you will never want to leave.
Somehow with "Last Sane Cowboy" he manages to pack an allegory of Orpheus' decent into Hades, a wild west yarn, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, and a gigantic talking scorpion into the pages of a mini-comic with a sense of Grant Morrisonish fun.
After the award ceremony, I made sure to put a copy of "Last Sane Cowboy" into the hands of one of the most influential people in the industry or "the true king of all media" as one of his clients calls him, Ken Levin.
