Later on, to differentiate the distinct type of Shaolinquan practiced at the Wudang Mountain where Zhang Sanfeng evolved it from the original version at the Shaolin Temple at Henan, people called it “Wudang Shaolinquan.
Zhang Sanfeng was a Shaolinquan master of the highest level.

I have always wanted to learn Shaolinquan since reading Sifu's " The Art Of Shaolin Kung Fu " a few years ago, but most of my early attempts were futile for various reasons, such as inexperience with Chinese Martial Arts, the inability to generate Chi Flow and doubt.
I was very lucky to have watched Sifu training the Shaolinquan students during one of the Intensive Course sessions, and believe me, I made mental notes (I know its not the same as actually doing it).
Shaolinquan patterns are very much alive and can adapt to meet the situation, but even in combat they look very much like they do in the classical forms.

It is said he mastered the well-known shaolinquan during that time.
It is possible that Zhangsanfeng, especially with his sound foundation in shaolinquan, may have used his subconscious to create taijiquan.

From the perspective of a student of Wahnam Taijiquan or Shaolinquan, all that I have written is by no means academic.
Shaolinquan practitioners are welcome to use patterns from their own repertoire.
To be honest, I can't recall exactly which breathing techniques Sifu taught at the last intensive Shaolinquan course I attended (March 2004).

Now, at the highest levels of Taijiquan and Shaolinquan, there is probably a convergence (I do not know this for sure), in that both are hard and soft.
In Thieu Lam school webpages (in Finnish only) the main difference between Shaolinquan and Taijiquan is said to be noi gong, which is a part of mind training: in Taijquan that noi gong part is more emphasized.
The health benefits of genuine Shaolinquan are at least equal to, and arguably much greater than those of Taijiquan.

Shaolin Quan, Shaolinquan or Shaolin Chü'an () is the term typically used to describe the Chinese martial arts that originate from the famous Buddhist Shaolin Temple and monastery at Songshan in Henan, founded in 495 by Tamo.
It was some 60 years after the founding of the Shaolin temple that an Indian priest named Ta Mo arrived at the temple.
The monks of Shaolin later combined the movements of Tamo's forms with those of the existing martial arts of the area.

External styles can be both the traditional styles focusing on application and fighting, as well as the modern styles adapted for competition and exercise.
Examples of external styles are Wing Chun, which emphasizes short-range punches and blocks, Shaolinquan, with its direct explosive attacks and high-kicking aerial maneuvers that resemble those of Korean Tae Kwon Do, and the many animal styles inspired by the movements of certain animals.
In opposite to internal styles, external styles begin with focus on speed and application, and integrate the internal aspects at a much later stage, when a high physical level has already been reached.

The internal styles improve the major internal organs: the heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, and spleen.
External styles include hard fast styles such as changquan (longfist), nanquan (southern fist), and Shaolinquan (Shaolin boxing).
The ultimate goal of both styles is to raise the physical level of the body; in this pursuit you learn more about yourself and learn to come to terms with who you really are.
