  Shape Of Despair - Band Biography and mp3s/songs,Hardcore Music/Emo Music/Screamo Music/Metal Music/Punk Rock Music ...
Shape of Despair came into being during winter 1995, the brainchild of band leader Jarno Salomaa (guitars and synth) and Tomi Ullgren (guitars).
While the debut "Shades of." caused quite a stir in the underground, their aim became unwavering for the second one and "Angels of Distress" was a bull's-eye shot, a defining moment for a talented band already well set in their ways.
But Shape of Despair seems to be a little harder, which is good.

The first sounds from the Shape Of Despair camp came in the form of Raven, a band of friends writing music under the doom metal banner.

In a way, Shape Of Despair sound like a direct reaction to the overwhelmingly upbeat and commercial trend in metal, replacing glitz and pomp with the harsh reality that all life ends.
Shape Of Despair’s form of songwriting takes time to develop, and unlike some of the bands (Evoken, Esoteric, Dolorian) I’ve heard actually build the soundscape to crescendo, unfurling all sonic devices to canonical proportions.
In the end, I would like to see Shape Of Despair shortening their songs and relying less on female vocals and atmospheric filler (see "To Live for My Death...") as such devices when used unsparingly detract from the overall arctic foundation.

::.. Metal Monk UK ..:: - Review: SHAPE OF DESPAIR - Shape of Despair
Shape of Despair is an apt name for a band that makes funeral doom of epic proportions.
A pre-version of the lovely ‘Sylvan-night’ from 2000s ‘Shade Of…’ is an interesting addition, shorter and lacking some of the atmospherics of the later version’s outro section, it is still interesting to note the progression from an early version to the final one.
Following this is a track from Shape of Despair’s 1998 promo tape.

Shape of Despair - Biography - AOL Music
Originally conceived by guitarists T.U. (rhythm) and J.S. (lead) in 1995, Finland's Shape of Despair combined the doom/death sound of early-'90s pioneers like Paradise Lost and Anathema with the synthesizer-laced, panoramic goth metal popularized in the late '90s by Tiamat and Moonspell.
In order to avoid being confused with New Wave of British Heavy Metal stars Raven, they also adopted the Shape of Despair name at this time.

An old adage says, "You are the product of your environment." For Finland¹s Shape Of Despair, the country's long, cold winters must have a resounding importance on the way the band envisions and arranges its songs.
Masters of their own genre, Shape Of Despair begin each dirge slowly, allowing each somber nuance to deeply sink in - to penetrate the deep recesses of the mind.
Unlike most application of female vocals, however, Shape Of Despair uses them to complement the guitar and keyboard lines - They¹re soft, inobtrusive and unbelievably glacial.

Shape Of Despair - Angels Of Distress
After what was arguably the darkest Metal album ever released, anyone having heard it either surrendered to their depressive inclinations and leapt off the nearest high-rise apartment or overdosed on potent anti-depressants.
SHAPE OF DESPAIR had successfully created the dreariest, most unrelentingly fatalistic fog of an album to be unleashed upon humanity and those of us who somehow crawled ourselves out from our hopelessness suddenly found that we craved more punitive action.
The haunting female serenade of wailing is as much a part of this album's miserable demeanor as it was with the prior effort and is what truly makes SHAPE OF DESPAIR so effective at creating dark atmospheres.

Shape Of Despair have been playing their unique brand of funeral doom for a decade now, having formed in Finland in 1995.
The key word here is slow, indeed, but not slow in the dreary, plodding sense, but more in the gentle ebb and flow that the guitars and keyboards put forth.
Funeral doom is often an acquired taste, and while Shape Of Despair may not be for everyone in the metal world, their take on this extreme form of music is arguably a bit more palatable than others in the field.

It's never easy to come up with a suitable follow-up to a great album, and Shape of Despair's second effort _Angels of Distress_ was just that.
Its successor, _Illusion's Play_, starts things off in typically laid back fashion with a lengthy instrumental intro, as if Shape of Despair are in no rush to prove anything to the listener.
Overall _Illusion's Play_ is a worthy follow-up to _Angels of Distress_, and although it may not cause as much of an impact, it should still satisfy fans of the band.
