Shapiro, Robert B - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about Shapiro, Robert B   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Shapiro is best known for the leading role his company has taken in developing and selling genetically-modified (GM) seeds to the agricultural industry, which has faced fierce opposition in the courts and from communities in many countries.
Shapiro promoted the life sciences model that combined pharmaceuticals with food and agriculture and, in particular, the use of biotechnology to improve crop yields.
Shapiro graduated from Harvard University with a BA in 1959, and from Columbia University School of Law with an LLB in 1962.

SHAPIRO EFFECT FACTS AND INFORMATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
In General_relativity, the Shapiro effect, or gravitational time delay, is one of the four classic solar_system_tests of general relativity.
It says that a radar beam (or light_beam) which passes near a massive object as it travels from some observer's location to a target and returns to the observer, takes slightly longer to make the round trip (as measured by the observer) than it would if the object were not present.
Shapiro proposed an observational test of his prediction: bounce radar beams off the surface of Venus and Mercury, and measure the round trip travel time.

 Attitudes Toward Guns and Violence
Shapiro, Dorman, Welker, and Clough (1998) developed and administered a questionnaire on attitudes toward aggression and violence in order to begin to tease apart these complex relationships.
Shapiro, Dorman, Welker, and Clough (1998) examined the relationships between gender, ethnicity, age, school system, and exposure to firearms and youths' attitudes towards guns and violence.
Shapiro first analyzed AGVQ differences as a function of the different demographic and gun exposure variables.

Child Trauma Institute - Evaluating Shapiro's Stance on EMDR Training
Considerable noise has also been generated ever since Shapiro contradicted her initial presentation, by stating that she had come to view EMDR as too complex an approach to be mastered on the basis of a journal article (Shapiro, 1991).
Shapiro, on the other hand, has insisted that this control has been necessary for client safety (Shapiro, 1991, 1993a), and to maintain the integrity of the technique until it has been adequately researched, with the ultimate goal of EMDR being taught at universities (Shapiro, 1992).
As Shapiro begins to loosen her control over training, with the publication of her book (1995), I believe that she should be commended for having stood her ground.

 Schmauder, Kennison, and Clifton (1991)
Shapiro and colleagues (Shapiro and Levine, 1990; Shapiro, Zurif, and Grimshaw, 1987, 1989) have recently reported that a cross-modal lexical decision (CMLD) task is sensitive to the amount of thematic information associated with the lexical entries of verbs.
The only significant effect found in the three sets of analyses of RT data was the Verb Category × Sentence Frame interaction, which was found to be nearly significant in the subjects' analysis for the monosyllabic LD target group and to be significant for the combined group of both types of LD targets.
Argument structure complexity effects are not consistently detectable with the one task, the CMLD task, which has been reported to be sensitive to the effect.

Upper-Level Frontogenesis Associated with the Birth of Mobile Troughs in Northwesterly Flow
The essence of the Shapiro effect is that, in the presence of cold advection and confluence, the cross-front ageostrophic circulation associated with the upper-level frontal zone becomes shifted towards warmer air, producing subsidence on the warm side of the frontal zone, favoring frontogenesis by tilting of the isentropes.
In particular, the Shapiro effect (both confluence and cold advection acting to enhance upper-level frontogenesis) is argued to lead to intensification.
By contrast, in the confluent case, forcing for isentrope rotation was primarily anticyclonic and located upstream of the trough, which would offset the cyclonic effect due to the vorticity and explain the prevalence for weak thermal advection (or inhibition of cold advection) among mobile trough births in confluence in the climatology.

Possible manifestation of the gravitational lensing effect in single pulsar timing
One effect is geometric and is due to the bending of the photon trajectory in the gravitational field.
Both effects were discussed by Krauss and Small (1991) who considered them as a source of magnification of luminosity and have suggested to use the observation of temporal variations of a pulsar pulse profile for finding of micro-lensing events in our Galaxy.
There is no unambiguity in identifying the distortion caused by the gravitating mass because the Shapiro time delay causes a sharp growth of amplitude of TOA near conjunction of the mass with the line of sight of the observer.

Shapiro effect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The Shapiro Effect, also known as the Gravitational Time Delay is the Speed of light in the presence of a Gravity field an effect predicted by Theory of relativity.
Irwin I. Shapiro wrote in the Journal of Astrophysics in 1964:...according to the general theory, the speed of a light wave depends on the strength of the gravitational potential along its path.
In his letter, Dr. Shapiro further suggested that a test of relativity theory could be made by observing delay of radar signals returned from the surface of a planet in our solar system.

Shapiro then covered the tank with a plastic sheet, kept the temperature constant, and sat down to read comic books or whatever scientists do while they wait for their experiments to percolate.

Schultz & Doswell: Conceptual Models of Upper-Level Frontogenesis
The Shapiro (1982) conceptual model as it is applied to the evolution of an upper-level frontal zone within a baroclinic wave is reviewed and its limitations are investigated through previous literature and two case studies presented herewithin.
Despite the successes of the Shapiro conceptual model in interpretation of the secondary circulations at different stages in the life cycle of a baroclinic wave, applications of the Shapiro schematic to frontogenesis, however, appear to be an oversimplification of the structural and kinematic complexities inherent in nature (as discussed further below).

Jacket 23 - Thomas Fink: David Shapiro's 'Possibilist' Poetry
In diverse fashions, Shapiro’s work and Language Poetry both feature vigorous investigation of how arbitrary or logical placement of ‘interiors’/ ‘exteriors,’ distinctions between supposed ‘origins’ and ‘copies,’ and designations of ‘nothing’ and ‘substance’ arise and may be contested in the uses of language.
In concert with the skepticism about narration and transparent ‘referentiality,’ both Shapiro and many of the Language poets are deeply committed to an expansion of poetic possibilities and a resistance to limitation of stylistic avenues.
Shapiro’s question hinges on the subtle shift of the second to last letter in two verbs (‘r’ to ‘n’).

For Midwest businessman Craig Shapiro, who helped Armstrong prepare her evidence for the Beit Din, the ruling was a test case that clears the way for the launch of Shlach Amee V'yavdonnee, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to help ``lost Jews" find their way back to Judaism.
The Beit Din decision could have a huge effect, Shapiro said, because it recognizes for the first time the validity of using records of both Jewish and non-Jewish provenance to prove someone is Jewish.
Shapiro said he hopes to find descendants of Jews who were forcibly converted in centuries past, including child Holocaust survivors, victims of Russian pogroms, and even survivors of the Spanish Inquisition and the Crusades.

MDD July/August 1999: The Mysterious Placebo Effect
Researchers still may be inclined to view placebo effects as a nuisance or as a background noise that complicates clinical trial design.
This is particularly true in crossover trials, she said, when participants are informed that they will receive placebo at some point in the trial, as opposed to being told simply that they may receive a placebo at some point in the study.
Like therapeutic effects, adverse responses to a placebo may have many determinants, including negative expectations or conditioning that might result from a distrust of doctors, many failed treatment attempts, or the side-effect warnings included in the informed consent.
