Shardlow is one of the best-preserved inland canal ports in the country.
Shardlow may not have the hills and splendid views to be found in other parts of Derbyshire, but for anyone interested in heritage and who enjoys walking by water it should not be missed.
Shardlow Marina is a colourful sight with boats of all sorts and sizes waiting to be sold.

 Shardlow village in Derbyshire - Information and photos
Shardlow is situated 8 miles south east of Derby in Derbyshire, just off the A6, was once a considerable inland port on the river Trent.
Many of the old cottages in Shardlow were replaced by modern developments in the 1960`s but some were saved when much of the canalside was designated a conservation area in 1978.There are still some large and fine houses remaining that were built by the wealthy canal merchants.
Shardlow Hall, opposite the church on the main road, was built in 1684 to a design by Smith of Warwick and Joseph Pickford of Derby fame.

Shardlow got up to rebute Larry and blatantly and outright lied as to what Larry had said.
Now one would think that a 'professional' like Shardlow would be more careful about falsifing someone elses statement, especially when it is being recorded, but the attitude of this group seems to be "Don't question me".

Shardlow used to have many small shops in people's houses and the present post office is on the site of one of these, that used to be run by the Ward family.
Shardlow Manor was taken down and rebuilt in 1746-7 by John Chambers of Wilne for Mr Alpheus Burgin at a cost of £43.
The original frontage of Shardlow Hall faced the road from Aston Lane to Great Wilne (now the footpath), the original building being 1684 with additions and a new frontage when the new turnpike (London Road) was put through in the 18th century.

The 18th century canal port, with all its associated wharves and warehouses is clearly to be seen.
Shardlow Heritage Centre is housed in the oldest of these warehouses.

SHARDLOW POOR-LAW UNION was formed in 1837, and consists of 49 parishes and town­ships, having 57 guardians, who meet every Monday, at 10 o’clock, at the Union Workhouse.

The canal village of Shardlow lies 6m SE Derby on the main road to Loughborough, just this side of the River Trent which marks the boundary with Leicestershire.
In the great age of inland waterways Shardlow was the eastern terminus and principal port of James Brindley’s Grand Trunk Canal, cut between 1766 and 1777 and now known simply as the ‘Trent and Mersey’.
And what with all those thirsty boatmen about, there was bound to be an abundance of pubs, most of which are still there, with a goodly selection of real ales - though the once-thriving brewery of Zachariah Smith opposite the Malt Shovel and the Cavendish Brewery of George Eaton have long since ceased to operate.

Regular monitoring of the Shardlow, ARC quarry, by Dr Chris R Salisbury, with help from the Quarry Manager, Robin Wooley, has resulted in a number of structures being recovered within close proximity at depths of some 2-3m below the gravel.
Chris has recorded and sampled elements of a palaeochannel (infilled river course), a stone and wood structure, and most recently identified a log-boat which still retains a cargo of quarried stone.
It may have been this flood which caused the log-boat to sink with its cargo of quarried stone.

There has been a settlement here since before the Doomsday Book was written and Shardlow was already an important inland port on the River Trent, long before the coming of the canals.
When the Trent and Mersey Canal was built and opened in 1777 - largely due to the efforts of the potter Josiah Wedgewood - Shardlow, at its eastern limit, took on new importance, quadrupling in population in just fifty years.
The wharf and surroundings at Shardlow is now a designated conservation area.

I guess Shardlow isn't really in the Peak District proper, unless of course you take the Pennines right to their bitter southern end, and finish at the Heritage Hotel (nee Pennine Hotel) in Derby City centre.
In the Bronze Age Shardlow was marshy wet ground on the edges of the then River Trent.
Possibly the only 'good-ish' thing to come out of the pits apart from a 'Windsor 3inch pea driveway gravel' is the discovery of the Bronze Age log boat and the stone and timber causeway/walkway it was discovered next to.

There are recorded connections between James SUTTON of Shardlow and the SUTTONs at Heanor Hall, but we are still looking for family relationships between them.
