In the News (Thu 4 Dec 08)

If Then Software Headquarters: ShareAlike   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
ShareAlike is a utility that will share iPhoto and iTunes libraries with other users on the same system.
For example, Dad can share his iPhoto library with Mom, who will be able to see and make changes to those photos--otherwise, each person on the system will have to have their own libraries with different photos and music.
Users of ShareAlike should back up their music and photo libraries before using this.

Macworld: News: ShareAlike shares iTunes, iPhoto libraries on same Mac
ShareAlike shares iTunes, iPhoto libraries on same Mac
Designed for use with Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther," ShareAlike features a pop-up menu that allows you to specify which user accounts on your computer can access your iPhoto or iTunes libraries.
ShareAlike then renames those users' existing libraries to keep their own files safe; your libraries will then be readable and writeable to other users.

 Terra Nova: TN + CC?
My reading is that ShareAlike allows derivatives and commercial use, with the requirement that the ShareAlike license be attached to those works (and thus commerical usage can't end up with IP rights to your work).
ShareAlike and NoDerivs are a mutually exclusive pair, Commerciality is orthogonal.
I know of course that there is a strong version of derivation that the clause seeks to address but I worry that underlying it is a presupposition about the weaker forms.

Viable commercial use of the documentation here could include packaging in the documentation for the documentation for the products in question we discuss.
Similarly, the shareAlike makes the entry point into using the information high.
Unless you want to use some kind of sampling license, so people are free to use parts of articles but not reproduce them verbatim.

Virtual Turntable: This Minutes's Podcast Safe Resources
After checking, explicitly with the head lawyer at CC I can happily tell you that this is simply not the case, the ShareAlike clause does not apply to dropping a song into a collection (including a broadcast).
The portion of the show that features song is SA, but not the whole show....

 Open Access to State-collected Geodata
All government-collected geodata should be open, that is, available for free distribution and re-use under a ShareAlike license.
Open access to it, under a 'Commons' (ShareAlike) license, is the best way to see its full benefits realized by industry and citizens.
At the same time such an arrangement, by requiring users to redistribute updates and improvements to the data, promises to deliver more and better data for less.

You always knew this was common (kottke.org)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Prompted by an email from Ian urging me to update my copyright notice, I finally headed over to Creative Commons to choose the proper license for this site.
I ended up going with Attribution-ShareAlike license which allows people (that's you!) to do anything you want with the content on this site as long as you provide proper attribution (Attribution) and release derivative works under an identical license (ShareAlike).
I'm doing this not because people are clamoring to use my content, but because I want to live in a society that has a large pool of material from which writers, artists, filmmakers, designers, and musicians can freely draw from to create their own work.
