Beach Island   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The first inhabitants of Long Beach Island were the Lenni Lenape, or Delaware, members of the Algonkian linguistic family, that predominated in what is now the Northeast U.S. The Island was first mapped by the Dutch sailing from New Amsterdam.
It lies along the east-central coast of the island, in the area known locally as the "South Shore", or, according to some, the "East Shore." To its immediate west is Grant City, and South Beach borders it on the north.
South Beach was the terminus of a branch of the Staten Island Railway to which service was halted in 1953; by the 1980s the tracks of this line had been uprooted, and tract homes now stand on the original right-of-way in many places.
