SHARK sailed for the Mediterranean and duty with the 6th Fleet on 12 August.
SHARK was in drydock at Norfolk from 1 January 1970 to 9 August 1971.
[SHARK was deactivated, in commission, on 16 October 1986 and formally decommissioned and stricken from the Navy Register on 15 September 1990.

SHARK sailed for the Mediterranean and duty with the 6th Fleet on 12 August 1961.
On 7 April 1965, at the shipyard, SHARK was presented the Navy Unit Commendation for meritorious service from 5 April to 9 May 1964, a period in which she "achieved results of great value and importance to the U.S. Navy in the field of antisubmarine warfare capabilities."
SHARK was decommissioned 15 December 1989, struck from the Navy List 11 July 1990 and disposed of through SRP at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on 28 June 1996.

The seventh Shark (SSN-591) was laid down on 24 February 1958 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Newport News, Va., launched on 16 March 1960, sponsored by Mrs.
Shark returned to Norfolk on 25 October 1965 and conducted type training, individual ship exercises, and ant/submarine warfare exercises until 8 January 1966.

 USS Shark (SSN 591)
Named after the fish, the USS SHARK was the fifth SKIPJACK - class nuclear-powered attack submarine and the seventh ship in the Navy to bear the name.
Decommissioned on September 15, 1990, the SHARK entered the Navy’s Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash., on October 1, 1995.
It is no official listing but contains the names of sailors who submitted their information.

 Last Days for the USS Robert E. Lee
She was to become the USS Shark (SSN-591), Newport News Shipyard Hull No 545, as one of the boats in the modified Skipjack class (SSN-585) design.
Within a few short weeks, she was designated as a SSBN-598 class becoming Newport News Shipyard Hull No 547, had a 130 foot missile section containing 16 Polaris tubes added amidships, and renamed as the USS Robert E Lee (SSBN-601).
Anyway, she'd been officially designated as an SSN ever since the offload of her last missile in January.

Keel laid as the USS Shark (SSN-591), Newport News Shipyard Hull # 545
Although the contract for Shark had been awarded almost 18 months earlier than that of Robert E. Lee, the Polaris program had priority, so the Lee was completed first.
Robert E. Lee and her four sisters in the George Washington Class (SSBN-598) that were built at other shipyards all started as a modified Skipjack-class design with a 130-foot missile section containing 16 Polaris tubes added amidships.

This reactor became the US Navy’s standard until the Los Angeles class joined the fleet in the mid-1970’s.
SSN 589 SCORPION was lost on 22 May 1968 with 12 officers and 87 enlisted men -- one of the worst casualties in the Navy's history.
Based on prior experience with such problems and an analysis of the accoustic signature of the Scorpion loss, the Navy initially concluded that the most probable cause of the loss of the Scorpion was the launch of an inadvertently activated torpedo, which turned and struck the submarine.

His class was 7323, Section 723 in 1973.

Captain James R. Lynch was relieved as Commanding Officer of the USS Snook (SSN 592) by Commander Curtis W. Olsen in the Change of Command ceremony last Wednesday.
Captain Lynch, a graduate of Purdue University, has served aboard the USS Shark (SSN 591), USS Casimir Pulaski (SSBN 633), USS William H. Bates (SSN 680), and the USS Gurnard (SSN 662).

From SARGO in March 1964, LCDR BROWN reported to Charleston, South Carolina and participated in the formation of Submarine Squadron EIGHTEEN as Staff Material Officer.
After two years LCDR BROWN reported to USS SHARK (SSN-591) as Executive Officer via Submarine School PCO/PXO Course.
In November 1968, CDR BROWN was detached from SHARK.

After devoting most of 1965 to training exercises, the submarine ended the year by entering Charleston (S.C.) Naval Shipyard for an overhaul that lasted until 18 October 1966.
Skipjack then got underway for sea trials off Charleston, before joining Shark (SSN-591) for four days of type training in the Jacksonville, Fla., area.
She then sailed to her new home pork, Norfolk, Va., before participating in Atlantic Fleet exercises.

While at Submarine School, he was among the first group of fleet officers selected to go directly into nuclear power training without first qualifying in diesel submarines.
Upon completion of nuclear training, he reported to USS Shark (SSN 591) where he qualified in submarines and later served as Engineer Officer.
In 1964, as a Lieutenant Commander, he was assigned to the Staff of Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet after which he served as Executive Officer of the Blue Crew of the USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN 644).

598, 599, and 601 which were SSBNs has their tubes SLBM tubes filled with ballast and became SSNs for the purposes of compliance to the SALT I Treaty.
All of these were convereted to SSNs and served some years in that role before being decommissioned.

Left Shark to spent last two years on the beach at NPTU, Idaho Falls Idaho., and retired Aug., 1964.

 Heavy Use Taxes Submarines, US Navy Commander Says
We probably ought to start refueling and upgrading the Flight I 688s, that would be a start.
Maybe ditch the Virginia-class for the cheaper Seawolf-class SSNs as well.
The only real solution to our immediate shortage of SSNs is to refuel the 688's that were planned for decommissioning rather than refueling!!
