Sharks - Recreational killer CD   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Still, on the whole, to call The Sharks Batmobile-copycats is absurd, because a) The Sharks were around first (according to the liner notes they're from the beginning of the eighties), and b) when listening to this album, it becomes obvious that any such resemblances are only skin-deep.
Still, the album has got its moments even after the beginning, such as the humorous Hooker, sung by Gary Day, who plays slap bass (one of the best sounding instruments around...), The Blockhouse and especially Charlie (The Sequel), which is basically the same song as Charlie, yet with new lyrics...
Overall, the album is riddled, as I already said, by being a tad uninteresting and boring.

Lenola: Sharks and Flames: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Granted, there were some great songs on that album-- their excellent versions of "Born Under a Bad Sign" and "Crossroads" (and, of course, you can't fuck with "White Room")-- but the album's rigorous overall consistency in tone and color made it remarkably dull as a whole.
The song is one of the few that employs a real climax, opening with fervent strumming and swelling harmonies and ultimately bursting into a fuller texture borne on pounding drums, all the while flaunting some nice fretboard fireworks.
Yet, despite some good material, Sharks and Flames ultimately succumbs to that age-old double album curse: it just doesn't need to be as long as it is, and with some editorial discretion, it could have been much easier to swallow.

Sharks and Minnows the perfect example of a band that is able to freely move around genres and general sounds to create a style of music that is distinctly theirs.
Sharks and Minnows -- the members of whom, bassist Chad Spangler, drummer Daniel Heisel and singer/guitarist/sole song-writer Christopher Simony, have been playing in bands in Atlanta since high school -- sound like what you'd expect from a trio where, live, two members' shirts are tucked in while the other's is tattered.
Sharks and Minnows sound, both recorded and live, is reserved yet raw, pop yet post-punk, a phenomenon explained perfectly by their influences, which range from U2 to R.E.M., the Smiths to XTC, Hüsker Dü to Jawbreaker -- your typical quality college radio fare.

Whereas their previous recordings had suffered from mediocre mixing and recording techniques, this new album is easily one of the best pure recordings I've heard in a long long time.
Although Devin Simony is not limited to one instrument, his contributions flesh out the album, giving a fullness to the sound, which enhances the recording.
Although I hoped that the time and care Sharks and Minnows took in producing the album would be well worth while, I honestly didn't expect the album to be this outstanding.

InternetEd Reviews: UFO- Sharks   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Consisting of vocalist Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way, drummer Aynsley Dunbar, and guitarist extraordinaire Michael Schenker, Sharks is an album with razor-sharp riffs and a lethally accurate rhythm section.
The production on Sharks is clean and is very effective at separating the verses from the choruses, though the vocals are mixed a tad too high.
Sharks starts off with “Outlaw Man,” a pounding hard rock tune that is followed by the gritty “Quicksilver Rider” with its riff-heavy structure and anthemic chorus.

The Sharks were formed in the late 1970's by guitarist Alan Wilson and were initially a 50's style Rockabilly band.
In 1993 Alan was producing an album for The Frantic Flintstones when bass player Gary Day suggested that the Sharks would be well received should they ever reform.
So, the Sharks started recording - using Gary on bass - and were snapped up by Cherry Red records who released the Sharks comeback CD on their Anagram label.

 UFO
'Sharks', the band's brand new album, set for release on SPV on September 2nd, is once again the result of the not always entirely unproblematic but always fruitful cooperation between this volatile trio and drummer Aynsley Dunbar.
'Sharks' was produced in San Francisco by Mike Varney and engineer Steve Fontana, the same team behind the successful predecessor, 'Covenant'.
The subsequent two studio albums, "Lights Out" (1977) and "Obsession" (1978) spawned huge hit singles such as "Lights Out", "Too Hot To Handle" and "Only You Can Rock Me" and rank among the most successful UFO recordings of all time.

Sharks comes two decades after UFO's last meaningful hit, at a time when you'd think UFO would call it a day and raise a glass to the late '70s, when Lights Out and Obsession were huge and Strangers in the Night was being heralded as a landmark live album.
Sharks is a musical masterpiece, in my humble opinion the best album UFO have ever made.
So there it is, Sharks in all its glory, a compelling musical masterpiece, with more hooks than a Peter Pan convention.

For instance, talking a bit about this, there's an album that I listened to recently, which surprised me for the "irony" it expelled: Marillion's "Radiation." It showed me how it is possible to establish a well-reasoned critic through jokes or through the "language of the absurd," regarding a serious problem such as environmental protection.
