Sharon Butala is well known for her autobiographical writings about her life on a prairie ranch, and her growing enchantment with the semi-arid lands of Saskatchewan near the Cypress Hills where she has lived for more than 25 years.
Butala frequently places her characters in such situations of extremity, because it is precisely in these situations that the truth cannot be evaded.
Sharon Butala is a master at stating the devastating truth in her stories with a quiet power that makes each story as stark as a sudden winter storm on a bone-chilling prairie night.

Bison Back from Brink of Extinction
Offspring of one of the few purebred plains bison herds in Canada, the calves were trucked from Elk Island National Park, near Edmonton, and set loose on rangeland that retired rancher Peter Butala and his wife, author Sharon Butala, donated to the Nature Conservancy of Canada in 1996.
Upon retirement, Peter Butala didn't want the sprawling ranch that had been in his family since 1913 to be subdivided and farmed.
The conservancy assumed control over 5,240 hectares that had been owned or leased by the Butalas and are now preserved as one large, unbroken tract of mixed grassland.

Review | Wild Stone Heart by Sharon Butala
Butala begins from a not uncommon position of "culture failure," of "huge spiritual emptiness." Before she finds her field, she has shed her cultural/spiritual past, her first husband, her academic aspirations, her career in education and has set out upon a new unmapped path.
As with all pilgrimages, this one is not about "the other." It is, as always, about the "quester." What Butala discovers in the field, the mystery that unfolds itself to her, is as simple and as profound as the revelations in the Garden of Eden.
Butala tells us how she placed crocuses from her field on the altar at her mother's funeral and how the unicorn vision arrived during a respite in caring for her dying sister.

Butala emphasizes the need to place these episodes of exploitation -- the careless overgrazing, the failed homesteads -- in historical context, to recover the ancestral and enduring meanings of the land, and to now see its true worth beyond merely commercial calculations or scientific measurements.
Butala's fictional writing, in her third book of short stories, Real Life, also published this spring, is similarly grounded, revealing inner landscapes that are sometimes as austere and daunting as the wild North American plains must have seemed to European eyes.
It's based on Butala's actual experience of serving on the Governor General's jury, and the internationally celebrated author that is the "victim" of the piece has died in the past year, lionized and eulogized more than enough to make up for any past slights.
