Folklore: Cecil Sharp in Somerset: some reflections on the work of David Harker - Research Article - Critical Essay
Sharp was among the pioneers of "collection in depth," visiting singers time and again to explore their repertoires fully and to examine variations in their singing; the first publication of his Somerset material in the Folk Song Society's Journal in 1905 set new standards in the presentation of folk music.
Sharp was a London music teacher who, between 1899 and 1903, discovered the existence of a surviving oral tradition, and who devoted the rest of his life to a campaign of collection, publication, organisation and publicity.
[1] Sharp was by no means the only significant collector of English folk music or the first in the field.

Sharp saw many of his musical peers go through similar phases—maturing in their musical tastes, but still bashing out the same rock songs.
At some point, though, Sharp noticed a widening chasm between the type of music he was playing and the music that he loved.
During his rock years, Sharp says, “the kind of music that I was playing was the kind of music that was in my record collection.

Kenny G is not a harmonic genius nor a technical wiz but simply a musician that developed his own style of music and indirectly has helped musicians to realize you can be success in the "music business" --simply by being original and getting people to listen to a pretty sound.
Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny has slammed soccer moms' favorite Kenny G by saying he "plays the dumbest music on the planet" and threatening to wrap a guitar around his head.
Then theres me, and I suspect millions of others for whom music is so much more than the banal wallpaper, written as the lowest common denominator (ie the least offensive to everyone) that pumps out of the LA studios and into our elevators, shopping malls and toilets.

", etc. In tonal music, spelling counts; there is an enormous functional difference found in tonal music between B-flat and A-sharp.
All B-flats in all octaves are members of the same pitch class; A-sharp and B-flat are members of the same pitch class.
In much twentieth century music, by contrast, the spelling of a pitch is a matter of convenience; functional differences between enharmonically equivalent pitches such as those found in tonal music may be lacking completely.

Cecil Sharp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cecil Sharp was a music teacher and composer interested in folk songs and music, who became interested in traditional English dance when he saw a group of Morris dancers at the village of Headington Quarry, just outside Oxford, in 1899.
Cecil James Sharp (1859-1924) was the founding father of the folklore revival in England in the early twentieth century, and many of England's traditional dances and music owe their continuing existence to his work in recording and publishing them.
Sharp's work in promoting English folk song dance traditions in the USA is carried on by the Country Dance and Song Society (CDSS).

Avantgarde Music. Elliott Sharp: biography, discography, reviews, links
Sharp emerged from the sociomusical revolution of the new wave of rock music and entered a jazz world that was still recovering from the destructive process of the creative improvisors.
Sharp reformed Carbon with Samm Bennett on percussion and samples, David Linton on drums, and Zeena Parkins on harp and keyboard to record Datacide (Enemy, 1990), an album that, abandoning the cacophonous aesthetic of the 1980s, bordered on industrial music and on death-metal.
Sharp opted for computer, sampler and drum machine, but his music did not change all that much.

Sharp's densely packed and highly rhythmic music restlessly explores intersections: of beauty and chaos, of microtonal variations and larger musical gestures, of styles and genres that might seem divergent and unrelated until you hear him.
Best known as an improviser associated with New York's fertile downtown music scene of the late '70s and early '80s, Elliott Sharp is also a prolific composer, producer, installation artist and record-label honcho.
I first met Elliott in 1986, when he would regularly visit See Hear, a music-book and fanzine shop in the East Village, where I worked on the weekends.

 Interview with Elliott Sharp
Elliott moved to New York in 1979, realising that it was probably the only place where he could pursue his musical interests, have an audience, and find like-minded people to interact with.
I suspect that Elliott himself might be a little more modest, but he's clearly aware of the way in which his music acts as metaphor and representation for more than just a series of notes on a piece of paper.
Elliott's musical life began age six, taking piano lessons which led to taking part in a recital at the age of seven.

Cecil Sharp – although not the first collector of folk song– was responsible for making people aware of the importance of folk music to the country’s cultural heritage.
For this one-off celebration of Sharp’s achievements, Hutchins has collaborated with a group of singers and musicians to create a four-piece tribute to important folk songs that Sharp collected, all linked together by Ashley’s narration, speaking words from the diaries and books of Cecil Sharp.
The year 2003 is a special year for all folk-music enthusiasts as it marks the centenary of the collection of first folk song in England by the remarkable Cecil Sharp, and thus the start of the English folk music revival.

 Key signature
Baroque music written in minor keys often was written with a key signature with fewer flats than we now associate with their keys; for example, movements in C minor often had only two flats.
Subsequent additional sharps are added on C, G, D, A, E and B. For key signatures with flats, the first flat is placed on the B line, with subsequent flats on E, A, D, G, C and F. There are 15 different key signatures, including the "empty" signature of C major/A minor.
For example, if a one-sharp key signature is placed at the beginning of a piece, every F in the piece in any octave will be played as F sharp, unless there is an accidental.

 TrouserPress.com :: Joe Jackson
Months after the Mike's Murder album (billed as music from the film) appeared, the James Bridges picture still hadn't, and rumors circulated over which problems were causing the delay; while the decision not to use Jackson's music was one of them, that could hardly have been the prime problem.
To his credit, Jackson's music is of a piece with the project's high quality: a cinematic use of '40s-style jazz, with a spot of artistic license, allowing for a few anachronistic styles and production techniques.
That Jackson was seeking an alternative to the fast-paced rock'n'roll of his first two albums was signaled by The Harder They Come EP (a straight reggae reading of the Jimmy Cliff song, plus two Jackson originals) and then trumpeted in no uncertain terms by Beat Crazy, the final LP with his original tight-knit band.
