The X68000 series contained a lot of off-the-shelf parts as well, components similar to DOS PCs and other computers at the time.

PC-98 & X68000 Nectaris FAQ Homepage (1992, System Soft, Japan) featured at BASE NECTARIS (USA)
The PC-98 was a series of popular personal computers sold by NEC in Japan (NEC, as you may recall, was responsible for the PC-Engine and TurboGrafx-16 video game consoles).
Sharp's X68000 series of personal computers was also popular in Japan...but they were known for their high-end graphic and sound capabilities (and thus became an ideal platform for gaming).

 Byte Cellar: Sharp X68000 Emulation
It seems to have set me in the mood for that type of game, and that may be why an article in issue 12 of Retro Gamer magazine caught my eye, today.
Debuting in 1987, the original X68000 was a striking fl, dual-tower design based on the 10MHz Motorola 68000 CPU.
But the fact is that the X68000 versions were routinely the best of the bunch, though the games never reached the audience they deserved.

The Sharp X68000, often referred to as the X68k was a computer system only released in Japan, that naturally, prior to using the Internet, I had never heard of.
When i first used an emulator for the X68000 back in the late 90s, and saw such perfect ported classics as Mat Mania, Afterburner, Bubble Bobble, Galaga 88, Street Fighter 2, etc. I was completely floored.
