Marksman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The sharpshooters used by both sides in the Civil War were less used as snipers, and more as skirmishers and scouts.
The most notable sharpshooter units of the Civil War were the 1st and 2nd United States Sharpshooters (USSS), who were formed from all states under the command of Hiram Berdan, who was the best amateur marksman in the nation at that time.
Confederate sharpshooters were often less well equipped, using British Whitworth rifles, rather than breech loading Berdan Sharps rifles.

One of the most widely recognized and often published photographs on the subject of Gettysburg, this melancholy view of a dead Confederate youth laying behind a stone barricade at Devil's Den was taken on July 5 or 6, 1863 by photographer Alexander Gardner and two of associates.
Gardner also speculated on the dead soldier's final moments in the sniper's nest, adding that he found his bleached bones still lying in the nest while on a later visit to the site.
The true facts of his death on the rocky slopes of Devil's Den are better known today, but cannot dim the feeling of loss Americans should feel when we gaze upon this scene and realize that he once had a name, a family, and a home.

American Civil War Books :: Shock Troops of the Confederacy - The Sharpshooter Battalions of the Army of Northern ...
The modern sharpshooter appeared in Central Europe around 1700 (the term comes from the German scharfschutzen), so the book begins with a look at how European armies employed both light infantry and sharpshooters through the Napoleonic Wars and the Mexican War in America to the “Minié revolution” in firearms just prior to the Civil War.
By the end of the war the sharpshooters were experimenting with tactics that would become standard practice fifty years later.
Overall, Shock Troops of the Confederacy deals with three themes: the organization and employment of the Army of Northern Virginia’s sharpshooter battalions; the history of light infantry from 1700 to 1918; and the human story of the sharpshooters themselves—on the picket line, in the trenches, and in the field.

Rockville, MD--Like a celebrity living on mineral water, the glassy-winged sharpshooter consumes only the dilute sap of woody plants--including grapevines in California, which is feverishly working to prevent the insect's flight into prized vineyards.
Now, in a surprising study published in the June 6 issue of Public Library of Science Biology (PLoS Biology), researchers at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR), the University of Arizona, and their colleagues have discovered that the sharpshooter's deprivation diet is sneakily supplemented by not one, but two co-dependent bacteria living inside its cells.
The sharpshooter channels the sweets from sap to the bacteria, which in turn feed the insect vitamins, cofactors, and essential amino acids.
