The USA is preparing for a military operation in Somalia to destroy the camps of the Islamic Alliance grouping which, is believed, to be connected with the al-Qaeda organisation.

One of the Kurdish representatives heading the Governing Council told "ash-Sharq al-Awsat" that the principle of federalism had been accepted by many for a future constitution, although the form or character of this federalism was yet to be decided and determined by the Iraqi people.
On another note, one of the Council members refuted in a declaration to the correspondent of "ash-Sharq al Awsat," that the Council had chosen Rend al-Rahim to succeed in the Governing Council Akila al-Hashimi, who was killed last month.
The source said that the name Rend al-Rahim has been put forth among a number, among them Safiya al-Souheil (the daughter of Sheikh Taleb al-Souheil who was killed by the intelligence services of the previous regime in Beirut) and Dr. Fawziya al-Attieh (residing in Iraq.)

ash-Sharq al-Awsat/ AFP: Shaikh Abdul Mahdi al-Karbala'i, the representative in Karbala of Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, rejected the suggestion by another cleric that the provincial council appointed by CPA official John Berry be submitted to a referendum.
In Karbala, the Coalition Provisional Authority gave in to popular demand, and said that the new 40-person provincial council recently appointed by the Americans would be subjected to a vote of religious leaders and notables.

Al-Sharq al-Awsat reports that the Shiite Badr Corps militia is denying any link to the assassination last week of Saadoun al-Janabi, a defense lawyer for one of Saddam's relatives.
He insisted that the vote in Ninevah was in fact 2/3s against, and that the constitution had really failed, even if the elected Iraqi government would not recognize it.

Dubai, 9 May (AKI) - Abu al-Faraj al-Libbi, the alleged al-Qaeda leader arrested in Pakistan last week, is not the terror network's N. 3, according to European secret service sources, quoted by the pan-Arab daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat.
An unidentified "senior" European intelligence source told Al-Sharq al-Awsat that there had been a case of mistaken identitiy - he argued that the real N. 3 was Abu Anas al-Libbi, not Abu al-Faraj al-Libbi.
Abu Anas al-Libbi is on the list of 22 "most wanted" figures drawn up by the United States after the attacks on the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.
