African Head Charge : In Pursuit of Shashamane Land - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
African Head Charge collects different elements of world music and combines them with a Western sensibility -- but rather than changing them into pop songs the way Peter Gabriel or Jah Wobble might, they work with dub, trippy psychedelia, and trance.
The dub and reggae influences make the album even more appealing -- "Animal Law" is like electronic dub, and the title track, "Somebody Touch I" is a bright and almost cutesy take on dub and reggae.
In any genre, dub, trance, electronica, or world music, In Pursuit of the Shashamane Land would stand up as a spectacular album.

 African Head Charge
Songs of Praise, like African Head Charge's previous albums, is a diaspora of sound, incorporating the feel of African, East Indian, reggae, dub, and Native American music rolled into one (The jazz fusion sound is relatively absent.), but this album is more suited to a mainstream audience (not that it's terribly accessible still).
Unfortunately, the material on Shashamane Land isn't as strong or as refreshing as that album, but nonetheless, there is some of that same magic to find here.
The best song on Shashamane Land -- and the one that most makes me hearken back to Songs of Praise -- is "Heading to Glory," a rousing instant classic combining inspirational African chanting with a funky guitar riff as only African Head Charge can do.
