Shashlik was established as a major food type during the Mongol occupation of eastern Europe & Russia and is today is the single most enjoyed food of the summer months in the former Soviet Union.

We travel widely and everywhere we have gone the Russians use the names Shish Kebab and Shashlik interchangeably to refer to and describe a dish most westerners call Shish Kebab.
It is usually available using any of several kinds of meet including pork (probably most widespread), beef, chicken, mutton and stag (venison).
Venison, Goat, mutton, lamb, camel, horse, chicken & beef are also used with lamb/mutton being the second most predominant meat used in shashlik.
