Shatranj or shatranji, also called medieval chess, is an ancient Persian game from which modern chess developed, and which is thought by some scholars to be the common ancestor of chess, Xiangqi, Shogi, Janggi and Makruk.
Pawns in Shatranj did not have the option of moving two squares on the first move.
Capturing all one's opponent's pieces apart from the king (baring the king) was a win, unless your opponent could capture your last piece on their next move, when it is a draw.

Shatranj, as the Arabs called it, or what in the West became popular as the game of chess, once found in early Arab culture a springboard for its development and popularity to become the most highly recognized board game of today.
So involved was Al-Adli with shatranj that he also found additional uses for the square pattern on the board besides purely playing on it.
After shatranj was embraced by the Arab culture following the Muslim conquest of Persia, there might have been some peculiar changes in the physical outlook of the game.

Ancient India - Sports & Games
Shatranj as Forbes has pointed out, is a foreign word among the Persians and the Arabians, whereas its natural derivation from the term Chaturanga is obvious.
The Encyclopedia Britannica concludes that "Other Persian and Arabian writers state that Shatranj came into Persia from India and there appears to be a consensus of opinion that may be considered to settle the question.
That the source of the European game is Arabic is clear enough, nor merely from the words "check" and "mate", which are evidently from Shah mat ("the king is dead"), but also from the names of some of the pieces".

It is logical to conclude that every one of the sections of the book required a deep understanding of the Shatranj game, and that many years and generations of players were needed to make possible that one talented man as Al-Adli recuperated the learnings of years of playing.
It is easy to see the similarities between Shatranj in its period of prosperity, and modern chess, and this goes beyond the pieces used and the movements, for as today, it involved an entire culture dedicated to the game in the Arab world.
To have a closer look to Shatranj here are some ancient mansubat or chess problems as they were published more than a thousand of years ago.

The other main changes between Chaturanga and the 2 player form of Chess, Shatranj, are the two Rajahs were demoted to Prime Ministers in the change to the two player form and their movement reduced making them much weaker while the moves of the Elephant and the Ship were swapped around.
The first reference to Shatranj occurs in a Persian book written around 600 AD which says that a Hind ambassador came to Persia from India during the reign of Naushirawan (Chosroes I, 531 - 579 AD) and presented the game to him as one of several gifts with a challenge to learn its secrets.
It is known that Shatranj was held in some esteem at the court of Saladin, who created the Ayubite dynasty in Egypt and Syria and the Christians certainly obtained medical secrets from physicians in this dynasty.

In manuscripts from the early 7th century a game called “Chaturanga”; (which later changed to “Shatranj”) is suddenly mentioned, a precursor of chess as we know it today.
Naturally we cannot be sure that there were no earlier forms, but the evidences seems to suggest that the game was invented from scratch by a single person in this area of the world at around this period of time.
The rules of Shatranj were very similar to those modern chess.

Shatranj was derived from Chaturanga, a board game originating in India in the 6th century which featured only four types of pieces: elephants, chariots, calvary, and infantry.
It is befitting that chess was a favorite Moorish pastime as many enjoyed the challenge of warfare strategy and tactics, and perhaps many were strong players.
Although Hannibal, the Moor of Carthage (247-183 BC) would not have played Shatranj, his military ingenuity would indicate that he participated in some aspect of war simulation.

In this last case (bare king), however, your opponent is allowed to make one more move and if he can take your last non-king piece as well, the game is draw.

According to Poonawalla, GM of Shatranj Napoli, “Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are the worst nights, because we have around 200 customers and 50 cars.” The restaurant has four valets, who all park cars in the numerous bylanes near Union Park.
Both Shatranj and Olive have security guards who patrol the areas where the cars are usually parked, so there is no question of the cars not being secure.
And while the restaurateurs seem undaunted by the prospect of squeezing cars into the area’s narrow bylanes, residents have often remarked on how the congestion in the area is one of the downsides to sharing an address with these swanky outlets.

 Revisiting 1857: Satyajit Ray's vision
Shatranj Ke Khilari brilliantly depicts the increasing apathy of the Indian upper class, showing how even seemingly harmless passion can become all-encompassing obsession, and banalities of the daily games overpower life itself.
The film boasts of exclusively brilliant performances, especially from Saeed Jaffrey and Amjad Khan, and the period setting is established not by lavish epic sets, but rather through exclusion.
I feel Shatranj ke khiladi (SKK) is one of Satyajit Ray's most overrated films and also his weakest.

SHIMLA, Sept 30 — "Shatranj", the latest computer software developed by the Army Training Command, the thinktank of the Army, will put the country on a par with advanced countries like the USA in simulated warfare technology.

The Hindi story, "Shatranj ke khilari," on which this discussion is based, was published in the journal Madhuri (Sweetness; Lucknow) in 1924.
In the Urdu story "Shatranj ki bazi," Premchand's narrator is deprived of the kind of distancing effect which could be achieved through the use of a Sanskritic vocabulary in the Hindi story.
"Shatranj ke khilari" and "Shatranj ki bazi" might, for example, be contrasted with the Hindi and Urdu versions of "Idgah"/"Idgah" (Id-festival Grounds) first published in Urdu in 1933, which offers one of Premchand's very few highly sympathetic, even admiring, portrayals of Muslim culture.
