Mirzam, Shaula is a subtle variable of the "Beta Cephei" type, changing its brightness by less than a tenth of a magnitude with two periods of 0.21 and 0.11 days going on at the same time, the variation the result of internal structural changes that no one understands very well.

Indeed, Shaula, the brighter one, is almost two times the diameter of our own Sun, almost 2 million miles wide.
And because it is 280 light- years away from us, we are seeing Shaula, not as it exists now this summer, but as it looked when its light left it 280 years ago.

Shaula (Lambda Scorpii), the two making the Scorpion's famed, and very real-looking, stinger.
Though the two stars were originally tied together by name ("Shaula," meaning "the Scorpion's stinger," at one time referring to them both), the name "Lesath" really has nothing to do with the frightful beast, and is a vivid lesson in how star names can become corrupted.
Though Shaula and Lesath appear very close (less than a degree apart) on the sky, they do not constitute a double: Lesath, 520 light years away, is 180 light years the nearer of the two.

Fitzgerald is a master *narrator.* We are damn lucky today that he chose law for a profession, but he would have done well as a teacher or a journalist.
In fact, Fitzgerald is doing a great job of listening to the questions, and then replying with what he wants people to know and what he *can* let people know, instead of letting the reporters control the Q&A period.
The freeps can believe that; one of the first things Fitz stressed in his conference was that Valeri Wilson *was* undercover at the time, and that it wasn't widely known outside the intelligence agencies.
