The atolls of the Maldives are formed from coral structures, separated by lagoons.
As suggested by Darwin, coral atolls are formed by the total disappearance of a volcanic mass beneath the sea and continued upward growth of coral reefs on this volcanic basement, resulting in the formation of a coral atoll or in local terms, 'atholhu'.
The island of Aahura in Shaviyani Atoll too was formed during a 1955 storm, which swept through most of the northern atolls.

Shaviyani Atoll (Sh.) is just south of Haa Dhaalu Atoll lies in between 6° 30' N and 5° 58' N. There are 15 inhabited islands, with populations ranging from 450 people in Narudhoo to more than 1900 people in Maakandoodhoo.
The capital, Funadhoo with Lhaimagu and Firubaidhoo as the closest neighbours, is situated on a large reef on the eastern side of the atoll Most of the inhabited islands are small with virtually no reef.
The islands in this atoll are dispersed on a wider area, about 25km radius, therefore large distances have to be covered when travelling in this atoll.

Locals in Feevah reported to Minivan Daily that Rameez had committed to donating 25,000 rufiyaa to spend on building the island’s harbour, in the presence of many of Feevah’s citizens, with the tacit implication that only if he was elected would the harbour be built.
Residents in Feevah said this is an attempt by Rameez to bribe his way into winning the seat for Shaviyani Atoll.
