Shaw AFB was activated on 30 August 1941, it was designated Shaw Field in honor of First Lieutenant Ervin Shaw.
By November, however, the 20th Fighter-Bomber Wing transferred to Langley AFB and the 363rd became the parent wing at Shaw.

On 23 September 1949 the 161st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron was transferred to Shaw from the 363d TRW at Langley AFB Virginia.
Two Tactical Reconnaissance Wings were formed at Shaw AFB from 363d TRW assets and went on to have their own separate histories in Europe (66th TRW) and Southeast Asia (432d TRW).
With the deactivation of the 432d TRW, the 4411th CCTG continued the training mission at Shaw for B-66 training until both it and the 837th Air Division were inactivated on 1 February 1963.

Air Combat Command's 20th FW flies three squadrons of F-16CJ fighter aircraft in conventional and anti-radiation suppression of enemy air defenses, strategic attack, counter air, air interdiction, joint maritime operations and combat search-and-rescue missions.
Shaw AFB is one of the Air Force's initial Joint Strike Fighter locations, according to an announcement Oct. 4.
The success of that program led to the signing of an agreement in April 2003 by the commanders of ACC and AFRC to establish associate units at ACC F-16 and F-15 bases, including a second unit at Shaw AFB.

The aircraft apron is part of a three-phase project to bed-down active Air Force and Air Guard units involved in Operation Noble Eagle, who are ready twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to intercept threats.
Spratt said the House approved $16 million to build a 144-room dormitory, $6.2 million to build a storage facility for aerospace ground equipment, and $9.3 million to build an aircraft apron.
Shaw already supplies such defense, but space is limited.

Spratt said the Army estimates, to date, that it will spend $2.9 million on design, $13.8 million on barracks, and $65.3 million on other facilities, including a headquarters for Third Army, support battalion, vehicle maintenance, base entry control point, and a small arms range equipped with combat arms training facilities.
The relocation of Third Army to Shaw is directed by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission and is scheduled to take place from 2009 to 2011.
He sent a letter in January asking where, when, and how much money would be coming to Shaw, and followed up by meeting with Defense Department officials to clarify their answers.

"A crew of the 9th TRS made the fastest recorded non-stop flight of an RB-66 without inflight refueling, from McClellan AFB, Calif., to Shaw AFB while on a routine training mission.
The aircraft making the flight is a sister ship to the "City of Sumter," the first RB-66 to arrive at Shaw.

Shaw is in Sumter, not a bad area but not a great one.
I was stationed in Goldsboro NC, (Seymour Johnson AFB) it's about the same size as Sumter, that town is very clean when compaired to Sumter.
