NIORDC and Sinopec signed a contract to develop Arak's major Shazand Refinery in Tehran on Sunday.
According to ILNA, Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh, managing director of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), said on the sidelines of a ceremony to sign a contract for developing Arak’s major Shazand Refinery that the two-billion-euro ($2.7b) project is the biggest joint venture with China.
Shazand’s nominal oil refining capacity will increase from the current 150,000 bpd to 250,000.

The total population of Shahzand at that time was probably 3,000, with about 20% to 30% Armenians, who since the early 1700 had gradually settled here, possibly because Shazand was along their rout from Isfahan to Armenia, before modern roads were built.
Shazand is a much bigger town now, almost a small city of 15,000 people.
The air that used to be filled with the fragrance of wild roses (gol-e mohammadi) and the freshly cut clovers is now filled with yellow smoke, and the smell of gases and chemicals.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his cabinet members arrived in Arak, capital of Markazi province, Wednesday morning for a two-day visit.
He is expected to visit a number of provincial cities including Shazand, Khomein (birthplace of the late Imam Khomeini, Father of the Islamic Revolution), Delijan and Mahalaat on the first day of his visit.
