Sheboygan County was established on December 17, 1838 and is located in Eastern Wisconsin on the western shores of Lake Michigan.
Sheboygan County consists of 15 townships, 10 villages and 3 cities with a land area of 513.7 square miles and a population of 112,640 as of 2000.
The county is surrounded by 5 other counties: Manitowoc County to the north, Calumet County to the north west, Fond du Lac County to the west, Washington County to the south west and Ozaukee County to the south.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older.

Sheboygan is served by the Chicago and North-Western railway, by interurban electric lines and by a steam-boat line (the Goodrich Transportation Co.).
A trading post at the mouth of the Sheboygan river was established about 1820 and was maintained for about fourteen years; in I834 a saw-mill was built at the first rapids of the river, about 2 m.
Sheboygan was incorporated as a village in 1846, and was first chartered as a city in 1853.

Sheboygan County is poised to become a model for non-motorized transportation in the United States and get millions in federal funding to help with the process.
Sheboygan County was chosen for the pilot program mainly because of its previous work planning and implementing bike trails and its ability to quickly implement plans, Petri said.
Shannon Haydin, Sheboygan County director of planning and resources, said the program leaves the county free to spend the money as it sees fit, but requires that the spending be reported and all projects be implemented within four years.

The Center's goal is to provide secure storage of historical documents of Sheboygan County and the surrounding area, and provide safe, public access to the records.
The Center is also involved in the development of audio-visual presentation materials on the Sheboygan County area, reprinting books of local history, and publishing research conducted by members.
