  Salt Spring Island Sheep
There are 10 to 12 different breeds of sheep on Salt Spring, the oldest being the Suffolk which have been on the island since around 1890 when settlers came from Great Britain.
Salt Spring sheep are raised mainly for meat which is sold in local restaurants and supermarkets as well as to off-island markets and through farm gate sales.
The main predator for sheep are the dogs that go into sheep farms, chasing and sometimes killing the animals.

Hair Sheep in the U.S.: Historical Perspectives
Although sheep with little or no wool had been known in parts of Texas since early in the 20th century, they were unknown or little known elsewhere in the country until 1970 or later.
The second importation of hair sheep to the US was of "fewer than 10" Virgin Island White sheep from the island of St. Croix in 1960; they were crossed with U.S. breeds to create the foundation for the Katahdin breed, and no pure descendants were kept.
Hair sheep (including a number of breeds/types not yet imported to the U.S.) are the predominant type of sheep in Caribbean and northern Latin American countries, but all such animals descend from hair sheep that came from West Africa one to two hundred or more years earlier, presumably in connection with the slave trade.

A Short Prehistory and History of Easter Island
Later, the island was further depopulated as many Rapanui were induced to leave for other islands: nearly 200 went to Tahiti to work on plantations and another 150 were moved to the Gambier Islands.
The whole island was a sheep ranch, and all the Rapanui islanders were confined to Hangaroa village.
By 1914, living conditions on the island were appalling; islanders were deprived of their land and access to nearly all drinking water.

Origins and Status of St. Croix Sheep   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Sheep identified on early pedigrees as “yellow” and with registration numbers lower than 100 are original imports from St Croix (including lambs born to ewes that were imported pregnant).
Spillet’s records were excellent and registration numbers of his sheep start in the 400s; influential Spillet sheep include the ram USU 884 (#1089), and various sheep in the Menig flock.
She obtained her sheep directly from USU and kept good breeding records; her purebred flock was dispersed upon her death and some were purchased by North Carolina State University (NCS) (where no breeding records were kept).

Breeds of Livestock - Sheep Breeds
There are a number of different theories regarding the origins of domestic sheep.
Some sources even hypothesize that the European mouflon actually developed from the first domestic sheep in European being allowed to become feral and that all sheep are actually descendants of the Asiatic mouflon.
The common features of today's sheep were already appearing in Mesopotamian and Babylonian art and books by 3000 B.C. Another indication of the early domestication is the fact that they are the only species of livestock unable to return to a feral or wild state.

The sheep's origins are as fuzzy as the stories of their introduction to Hog Island, once one of the larger barrier islands off the Virginia coast.
In 1933, a hurricane destroyed most of Hog Island and the residents were evacuated, leaving the sheep on the island to fend for themselves.
The Hog Island sheep are concentrated in the Virginia and North Carolina area, so for those who are thinking of trying the sheep in another region, preparations must be made for sheep or lamb purchases and future breeding or additions to flocks.

 The Island of Sheep
First published in 1936, The Island of Sheep (or The Man from the Norlands as it is known in the USA) was the fifth and last of John Buchan's 'shockers' featuring Richard Hannay.
In that cool, mellow, scented dusk, where the only sounds were the drift of distant human speech, and the tinkle of the burn, and the calling of wild birds, and the drowsy bleat of an old ewe, I seemed to have struck something as changeless as the hills.
In The Island Of Sheep, the whole may be less than the sum of its parts, but in those parts we see examples of John Buchan's writing at its finest.

Nantucket Conservation Foundation : Returning Sheep to the Island of Nantucket
The Island of Nantucket is home to the sandplain ecosystem, one of the rarest ecosystems in the world.
Nantucket was one of the largest whaling capitals in the world during the 1700’s and early 1800’s, and a large number of settlers that came to the island during this period brought sheep and other grazing animals with them.
The sheep overgrazed trees and shrubs, allowing low-growing heathland and grassland plants to develop without competition for sunlight and nutrients.

The Nature Conservancy in California - Santa Cruz Island: Removing Feral Sheep
An important part of the Conservancy’s work has been helping native plants recover after a century of overgrazing by feral sheep, descendants of the original flock that arrived in the 1850s and of others brought to the island later.
The Conservancy initiated a study of the feral sheep and their impact on the island in 1978, and the frightening results turned Santa Cruz into a conservationists’ battle to save the island’s natural communities and native species.

 prolific tropical sheep
Barbados Blackbelly sheep are hardy and well adapted to a semi-arid tropical environment in which they have been reared for at least three centuries in close association with man. They seem to tolerate moderate variations in environmental temperatures quite well and at times show some degree of physiological adaptation.
In any experiment designed to evaluate the performance of Blackbelly sheep, cognisance must be taken of the fact that these sheep are traditionally accustomed to be managed in small flocks and that their performance may deteriorate under large scale farming.
Sheep are mostly grazed on rough pastures; the better managed flocks have access to improved pastures of Guinea or Pangola grass and may be given a grain supplement.
