A Sheepdog trial (or simply dog trial) is a competitive dog sport (additional info and facts about dog sport) in which herding dog (additional info and facts about herding dog) breeds move sheep (Woolly usually horned ruminant mammal related to the goat) around a field, fences, gates, or enclosures as directed by their handlers.
However, the sport's organising bodies regard the first recorded sheepdog trials as those held in Bala (additional info and facts about Bala), Wales (One of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; during Roman times the region was known as Cambria), in 1873.
Sheepdogs are interesting enough to watch that they have been featured on television and in film.

The difference from one trial course to another doesn't matter: the challenges are roughly the same for every dog competing in a particular class on a particular day, which is all that is necessary to come up with placements.

In the U K the trials appear to have been conducted on the commons and the dogs required to work 3 and later more commonly 5 sheep with a driving and shedding component.
