Sheet film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sheet film is large format photographic film supplied on individual sheets of film base rather than rolls.
To use sheet film, the photographer places a sheet of film, emulsion side out, into a film holder in the dark, and closes the dark slide over the loaded film.
Sheet film is large enough to accept direct re-touching on the negative.

Photographic film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Photographic film is a sheet of plastic (polyester, celluloid (nitrocellulose) or cellulose acetate) coated with an emulsion containing light-sensitive silver halide salts (bonded by gelatin) with variable crystal sizes that determine the sensitivity and resolution of the film.
Black and white reversal film exists, but is uncommon — one of the reasons reversal films are popular among professional photographers is the fact that they are generally superior to print films with regards to color reproduction.
Some films, like Kodak's Technical Pan, are not ISO rated and therefore careful examination of the film's properties must be made by the photographer before exposure and development.

 Film vs. Digital
Film has already disappeared from professional newspaper use a year or so ago, although small town papers may still use it, and likewise, no digital capture system has come anywhere near replacing 8x10" large format film for huge exhibition prints that need to be hellaciously detailed.
These typical comparisons of course put the film at a huge disadvantage since they are eliminating all of film's advantages and reducing the comparison to the trivial resolution issues the newbies argue about.
For the film image I used the cheapest landscape camera there is, a $700 4 x 5" Tachihara and my 50 year old Schneider Symmar 150 mm f/5.6 Convertible lens with a huge dent in the lens barrel and ordinary Fuji Velvia film.
