Sheffield Attercliffe constituency was created when the Sheffield constituency was split into five in 1885.

The Great Sheffield Flood, also known as the Great Inundation, was a disaster that devastated parts of Sheffield, England on March 11, 1864.
This sent a wall of water flooding down the Loxely valley, through Loxley and Hillsborough, and then down the River Don through central Sheffield, Attercliffe and as far as Rotherham.
The estimated 3 million m³ (700 million imperial gallons) of water destroyed 800 houses, killing 270 people, and wrecked nearly every bridge as far as the Lady's Bridge in the city centre.

The application site is identified by the Unitary Development Plan for Sheffield (UDP) as being within a Housing Area.  Within such areas Housing is a Preferred Use within the terms of Policy H10.  The development of the site for Housing use is therefore acceptable in principle.
The application site is the grade II listed former Carbrook school.  It is located at the junction of Janson Street and Attercliffe Common close to Hallam Arena.  The building was built in 1874 and is constructed of stone with a slate roof, it has two main floors.
The application is to change the use of the building from food and drink (Class A3) to offices (Class B1).  It is also proposed to erect a timber pergola on the west side of the building and provide landscaping in order to create an external seating area.

The great reservoir of the Sheffield Water Company—a reservoir nearly 100 acres in extent, and which held more than a million cubic feet of water, suddenly burst its embankment and swept with the fury of another Deluge down the narrow gorge formed by the Loxley and Stannington Hills into Sheffield itself.
The bridges that formerly crossed the stream have been swept away to their foundation stones, and the districts which the streams divide are separated by a rushing torrent of water, which had not subsided even on Saturday.
Turning toward Sheffield and embracing a brief exploration of the ruins showed that the tidings of disaster failed to represent the full extent of the dreadful catastrophe.

Sheffield has one of the most unique histories in the UK, Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned in the Manor Castle, Cromwell sieged then later destroyed Sheffield Castle and then recently there was the blitz of the Steel works.
So Spring Heeled Jack appeared in Sheffield long before the first recorded sighting in 1837, by Jane Alsop 1, who when opening her door was confronted by a "shadowy figure so tall she had to raise her candle to see the face".
The night before she was looking over Attercliffe looking towards the Steel Works when she saw a figure "jumping" across the roof tops.

 Desmond Peter Middleton, Made In Sheffield
Desmond Peter Middleton was born at the George IV on Infirmary Road in Sheffield on 1 January 1921, tradition has it that his father, Arthur Middleton was the only teetotal Landlord in Sheffield at the time, but I don't know if this was true.
They stayed in Sheffield with family initially and then moved to Bedford, living in a small village called Swineshead where Peter became a Rural District Councillor.
Peter was a true "Made in Sheffield", very proud of his Sheffield roots, appearing to have a rough, tough exterior but very kind and thoughtful to the needs of others.

It may be that their son Samuel Cavalier, born in Sheffield a year after the death of Samuel Holberry, was named in memory of the town's iconic Chartist leader.
In the autumn of 1838, at 19, she married Samuel Holberry, who was then becoming active in Chartism in Sheffield, and both appear to have been involved in a plot to seize the town hall.
She is buried in the grave originally bought by Sheffield Chartist Association for Samuel.

At the time of their marriage EDWIN was 22 years of age and MARY was a year younger.
I have also posted pages on the SANBY Family in Sheffield for the census years 1871, 1881 and 1891.
The final photograph on the page shows Christ Church, Attercliffe, Sheffield: the church where my grandparents were married in August 1918.

When civil registration was introduced in 1837, the town of Sheffield was divided into registration districts based upon the two poor law unions of Sheffield and Ecclesall Bierlow.
The Sheffield Registration district comprised of the townships of Sheffield, Attercliffe and Brightside, together with the parish of Handsworth.
Thus a birth could be registered in Sheffield, but the baptism take place at a church in Ecclesall Bierlow and visa versa.
