Were the ones in Sheffield to be grouped as a pair rather than as three with Rotherham their entitlement against the county average would be almost exactly eight seats, so the disparity with the electoral quota is much less than it is with the grouping of three.
The Penistone constituency was an historical area which, like orange peel, took the outer peel of Sheffield right round from Thorpe Hesley to Strines and had it in with Penistone partly because it had been part of the old West Riding and it was largely the area that Sheffield had taken in many years previously.

It should be noted that the ratio of residents who are registered to vote in each constituency is not a reliable estimate of the registration rate of the eligible population: the resident population aged 18 and over is not the same as the number of people eligible to vote.
The UK parliamentary electorate excludes residents of countries other than the UK and the Commonwealth and includes UK citizens resident abroad.

The constituency is dominated by Luton airport and the Vauxhall car plant, and it came as a major blow to the area when Vauxhall announced that they plan to close their plant by mid 2002 with the loss of 2,000 jobs.
The constituency is part of the Neath and Port Talbot local authority area, which voted Yes in the 1997 referendum by a majority of 18,267, which was 66% of the vote in that area - the biggest single Yes percentage in Wales.
A very middle class constituency, it has the fifth highest proportion of non manual workers in the country (78.9% of its workforce) and over a third of its adult population possess higher educational qualifications, compared with a national average of 13% (according to the 1991 census).

I had not intended to speak today, but events connected to Zimbabwean detainees in Yarl's Wood in my constituency over the past three weeks—and particularly over the past 24 hours—have left me appalled at the way in which some of their cases are being handled.
If a person has been properly represented and has gone through all the appeal processes and been adjudged to be not an asylum seeker but someone who needs to be returned, the policy must require that return, if it is to mean anything.
However, my defence of that system was based on a sense of justice and decency, and I am now beyond defending it and the decisions of those who are behind it.

I am sure that the Minister will be happy to know that tenants in Sheffield are extremely pleased by the doubling of capital expenditure on housing since this Government came to power.
They are pleased with the setting of the decent homes target, but they are also pleased that the new Labour administration in Sheffield has withdrawn the stock transfer application previously made by the Liberal Democrats, because council tenants are overwhelmingly against the transfer of ownership of their homes.
I can further confirm that if Sheffield comes off the reserved list, it will not be disadvantaged in respect of the consideration of future options and the city's achieving the decent homes target.

Labour MP Clive Betts was today handed down a seven-day suspension from the House of Commons for for breaching the parliamentary code of conduct by helping his researcher in an attempt to mislead immigration officials.
The Commons standards and privileges committee said that the Sheffield Attercliffe MP had acted "extremely foolishly" in agreeing to copy a doctored document, which Brazilian Jose Gasparo hoped would help him extend his stay in the UK.
And the committee found that in applying for a parliamentary pass for Mr Gasparo, a former male escort, Mr Betts had risked damaging public confidence in the integrity of parliament.

I have numerous constituents on both sides of the argument, but everyone is fed up with the delays in the making of funding decisions.
Although my own constituency has limited farming, I am well aware of the devastating impact of the weather on the harvest during August.
The agency admits that it failed in the initial licensing and in the monitoring, and it is now failing to meet the commitments that it has entered into with local people, with Somerton town council and with me to keep us informed of progress because it does not answer letters.
