Sheffield Manor, also known as the Manor Lodge or Manor Castle is a lodge built about 1510 in what then was a large deer park east of Sheffield, England, to provide a country retreat for the fourth Earl of Shrewsbury.
Mary, Queen of Scots was held prisoner by the sixth Earl of Shrewsbury at both Sheffield Manor and Sheffield Castle, her ghost is said by some to haunt the Turret House building.
After Sheffield Manor fell into the hands of the Duke of Norfolk, it was neglected, sold to tenant farmers, and largely dismantled in 1706.

The introduction of this new branch of trade, gave to Sheffield a share in the manufacture of silver plate; and for the encouragement of this manufacture, an assay office was established, and opened in the town in 1731.

As early as 1554 the cutlers of Sheffield were conducting such business as the granting of trade marks, laying down rules concerning the taking of apprentices and the observance of holidays, and regulating quality of work, by consultation between the lord of the manor and the jury in the Manor Court of Sheffield.
By 1700 Sheffield had almost gained the monopoly of the cutlery trade and by the middle of the eighteenth century the growth of this trade had been followed by a considerable increase in the size of the town.
Sheffield knives are a vital need in most industries and particularly in those which deal with necessities one instance is agriculture, for knives are needed at all stages of food production, both in the raising and reaping of crops and the dressing of carcasses.

Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned at Manor Lodge on a number of occasions, over 14 years, under the custodianship of the Earl of Shrewsbury.
After an alleged affair with the Earl, Elizabeth I decided her presence was threatening the stability of the Shrewsbury household and Mary was moved to another gaol.
The Sheffield Manor Lodge estate also has two 17th and 18th- century stables, a Georgian farmhouse and an 18th century cottage.

Following the farcical conference of Westminster during which the Casket Letters were produced in evidence against Mary, she was taken further south from Bolton Castle to Tutbury in Derbyshire in January of 1569.
By March however, Shrewsbury reported that Mary was severely ill with "grief of the spleen", symptoms which her doctor attributed to "windy matters ascending to the head".
This is how Mary came to be moved to the more comfortable prison of Wingfield Manor, now an imposing ruin outside the village of South Wingfield in Derbyshire, where she was lodged in the north-east tower with views across the valley.

The priority, she said, would be the distribution of blocks of tickets to local schools across south Sheffield and encouraging local residents to come along, although the middle classes from Sheffield's leafy suburbs and ballet lovers generally would inevitably be applying for the free tickets as well.
She said the trust would be working with other bodies, such as Sheffield City Council, to try and secure grant aid and sponsorship to meet the £35,000 cost.

That may be right what you say about the 'manor peoples' views counting -- thats probably because you want to whitewash the fact that you live in a dump.

I have been collecting information about Manor Lodge and the surrounding areas for a few years as i am interested in the local history being born and bred round here.
the original manor wesleyan church stood in the grounds of the Manor Lodge and in the early 1900s the new chapel was built at the top of what is now called Manor Park Crescent.
Would i be right in thinking that the Cowlishaws who lived across from the Manor Castle ruins were the same family who had Stand House Farm where the school now stands, I can remember then taking the cattle into the fields at the end of Waltheof Rd in the late 20,s.

Residents from one of Sheffield’s best known estates have received a boost, with news of a Section 30 dispersal order that comes in to force this week, supported by an extensive multi-agency initiative.
Operation Delimit kicks off in the Manor and Woodthorpe area on Friday (21 January) in response to feedback from a survey filled in by Manor residents in August 2004.
Police and Sheffield Homes (on behalf of all RSLs) have both launched special Delimit phone lines for local residents to leave information in confidence about the people responsible for causing antisocial behaviour.

January's speaker was Peter Warr of the Ranmoor Society who described how the Rand Moor situated three miles west of Sheffield was transformed from a hamlet of fewer than 50 buildings with a Methodist chapel in 1854 to perhaps the most desirable suburb of Sheffield by the turn of the century.
From Victorian grandeur, March's meeting took us to the remains of Tudor splendour when Sara Morton, secretary of the Friends of Sheffield Manor Castle told us of the work of this small but vigorous group who are dedicated to ensuring the recognition and preservation of this historic site.
Altogether Sheffield Manor Castle deserves better, particularly as nearly all traces of the original castle alongside the river Don in the city centre have been obliterated.
