Sheffield station has always been small, dirty and in a poor position related to the city centre.

When Sheffield’s Midland Station was built in 1870 it was marvelled as an achievement overcoming the immense difficulties of the local terrain, building rails and roofs over the River Sheaf and so successfully creating a relatively central railway station for Sheffield.
Today the Station is in a state of change, it is undergoing a major £35million refurbishment programme in an attempt to make a ‘more accessible and easier to use train station’ (David Curtis ‘Sheffield Station on track’, 12 September, 2001).
